Why the Trench Coat Is the Only Thing You’ll Want to Wear All Spring
Laurel Pantin, Meagan Wilson

This spring, we’re marrying a few (hint: four) of our favorite trends with the style archetypes that just won’t quit. Here are the girls we’re taking cues from while we get dressed this season, where they’ll be wearing it, and how you can pull it off, too.

We’re about to make a highly contested statement: the trench coat is not only back (did it actually go anywhere?), but it’s cool. Even if you, like yours truly, have long eschewed the piece in favor of just about anything else, this season’s iterations are undeniably wish-list-worthy. Here’s how we recommend wearing yours.

The girl: The Careerist

Think...Audrey Gelman, Vanessa Traina, Emily Weiss

She never leaves the house without: Her vintage men’s gold Rolex.

The beauty product she swears by: A brick red lipstick, worn down to the last little nub.

Her slightly under-the-radar getaway of choice: A long weekend in Reykjavík.

It’s not quite a coat, and it’s not quite a wrap dress: instead, it’s somewhere in between, and the perfect solution to every “what the hell do I wear today” dilemma you’ll encounter this spring.

Betcha didn’t see this one coming, huh? Yep, Opening Ceremony went and did pretty much the impossible and made trench dressing sexy by way of this strappy, pushed-off-the-shoulder take on the classic. Pair with a red lip, a mussed-just-so updo, and some thoroughly experimental slides to shake things up further.

Trench-style outerwears coolness factor is intensified by approximately a billion when splashed with graphic details, like this Red Valentino number. Wear with scalloped jeans and leather slides for the perfect thing to wear on busy-lazy Saturdays, all spring long.

The best way to liven up a taupe trench and khaki trousers? A lavender cashmere sweater peeking out just so. Then, for a little bonus cool, throw on a pair of black slides. Keep it from erring on the side of too casual with blingy gold statement earrings.
