Backstage At Alexandre Vauthier Couture

Alexandre Vauthier mixed traditional couture codes with streetwear references in his spring/summer 2017 couture show last night at the Grand Palais. There was a hint of the ‘80s in the collection, which was a mix of hem lengths and silhouettes from body-hugging micro-mini dresses festooned with Swarovski crystals to voluminous taffeta ensembles. The collection cycled through deconstructed dresses shrunken to tiny proportions in metallic leathers and more traditional iterations embellished with feather detailing.

Then he switched things up by sending a series of models wearing intricately constructed voluminous taffeta tops with ruffled trains paired with denim cut-off shorts (surprise!). He continued to subvert couture tropes with ensembles that took motifs from dirt biking outfits and reimagined them in luxe knitwear with crystal detailing paired with cropped motorcycle-inspired pants molded like a second skin.

This season, Vauthier also introduced a sharp color palette into the collection. The brand has always used black, white and gold as the basis for every collection, but this season there was a fearlessness as he committed to using bold blues and reds, which were seen throughout the collection from knitwear to shoes.
