There are a few families you instantly recognize by last name only. Kennedy, or Kardashian, for example. Or, say, Marley.
While you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn’t know who Bob Marley is, his eleven (!) children are just as prolific and awe-inspiring as their dad. So when we were invited to the home of his eldest son, Ziggy Marley, we were, in a word: stoked.
Marley’s accomplishments are nothing short of incredible: having won five Grammys for his reggae music (his latest album was released in February), he just released a cookbook called Ziggy Marley and Family, full of Jamaican-inspired recipes from the man himself, along with a handful of friends and relatives. Oh, and did we mention his family has a complete lifestyle line called Marley Natural that includes body care items as well as smoking accessories, and he has a line of organic cooking ingredients called Ziggy Marley Organics? He’s also behind the graphic novel Marijuanaman, wherein cannabis is the superhero, not the “bad guy.” Needless to say, we’re on board.
The man himself is every bit as cool and laid back as we expected (even willing to take a spin on his motorcycle for our enjoyment), and it quickly became clear that, just like the title of his book, family is most important to him. As he posed in front of a wall of photographs of his family and ancestors, and spoke to us about the five things he can’t live without (hint: it’s only one thing), we felt like we really got the full Marley experience. Add to that an uplifting speech about the state of the country, and the meaning behind his music, and we left feeling like every little thing was gonna be all right.
