Sophie Buhai

Crop topschokersbeanies and lipstick shades stolen straight out of The Craft; when it comes to the '90s resurgence that's been impossible to avoid for several seasons over, we like to think the bi-coastal design duo behind contemporary label Vena Cava are at least partly responsible.

The label, which Sophie Buhai co-founded with Cov-alum, Lisa Mayock, has pretty much been our go-to for playfully printed separates for what feels like forever. After all, the pair has been doing the whole '90's revival thing long before we found ourselves digging up our dad's plaid-splashed flannels or hacking up oversized mom jeans into artfully slouchy cut-offs. Fast-forward to us stopping by Buhai's dreamy Silverlake bungalow. As we toured around her space, Buhai filled us in on the life of the line: "Vena Cava was started because Lisa and I felt there was a way our friends were dressing that did not exist on the sales floor. It was a mix of old designer, thrift store gems, and current staples. We wanted to offer the way we (and our friends) were dressing to more people."

And so is it any surprise that Vena Cava's aesthetic extends to the designer's wardrobe, too? Among Buhai's belongings, we found a seriously mean collection of vintage jewelry and one-of-a-kind accessories, including a bracelet Buhai made herself from beads collected from junk shops in the Valley. But it's not just about vintage for the designer. According to her closet, Buhai also a serious weakness for Isabel Marant, Prada sandals and Céline bags. Oh, and just in case you required any further proof that VC is literally the best thing ever? Allow Buhai to describe the Vena Cava girl in her own words. "[She] likes road trips, sculpture parks, flea markets, botanical gardens, 70’s cinema, and 90’s simplicity. She likes to reference the past, but always feels current." See what we mean?
