A few years ago, a man I met on a dating app called me a witch as an "insult." My response? "Thank you!" I took it as a compliment, acknowledging my spiritual connection to nature and my power to cast spells that resulted in positive change. This interaction inspired me to revisit my favorite witches: Sabrina, of course, from Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Sally and Gillian from Practical Magic and, last but certainly not least, Sarah, Nancy, Bonnie, and Rochelle from the 1996-film The Craft.
As summer kicks into high gear, I can't help but continue to think about Sarah, Nancy, Bonnie, and Rochelle more often. I mean, is it just me, or is there something about this time of year that makes you wanna sit around a fire in a vintage maxi dress from the '90s and practice witchcraft?
The Craft follows four teenage girl outcasts at a Catholic school who practice witchcraft and use their powers to avenge those that have wronged them. Along the way, they learn how not to abuse their powers and that karma is very much real. The Craft resonates with me because of the gothic, edgy wardrobe. And while the PVC coats and chunky knitwear might naturally inspire your fall and winter looks, I think there are some notes to take for summer, too.
Ahead, five fashion tips and tricks that we're stealing from The Craft ladies this season.
'90s-Inspired Slip Dresses
IMDBThis summer, we're embracing the '90s slip dress—a term that we will forever be searching on Depop and Etsy. What makes the '90s slip dress grungy and witchy are the patterns: paisley and dark florals, in particular.
Baby Tees
IMBDA forever staple, the ladies of The Craft often paired baby tees with their dark plaid schoolgirl skirts or patterned maxi skirts. Consider the baby tee a supporting character there for practicality and to help your witchy look flourish.
Red-Lens Sunglasses
IMDBThe red lens sunglasses in The Craft are forever ingrained in my memory. And, they work so well to support the dark '90s aesthetic. Something about the red lenses feels bolder, more mysterious, and spellbinding, if you will, than your traditional lenses.
Layered Beaded Necklaces
IMDBA huge part of what makes The Craft wardrobe is the accessories—especially all of the ladies' necklace stacks. What sticks out to me the most is their dark layered beaded necklaces. With them, they layer chains adorned with crucifixes, but the beads are what really give witch to me.
Crucifix Earrings
IMDBHere at Coveteur, we're huge endorsers of the statement earring—we even believe that they have the power to make the whole outfit. While in The Craft, the accessories didn't stop at the crucifix earrings; they still made a major gothic statement.
