Getting Ready with Stephanie LaCava
Renée Rodenkirchen

“My mom said that I never really let her [dress me]. I always did my own thing, and would wear whatever I felt like wearing,” writer and Cov-alum, Stephanie LaCava told us. “Once I went to nursery school with every single plastic necklace around my neck. I couldn't move, but I was so happy.”

When we got word that LaCava would be attending the kick-off pre-party for the annual Guggenheim International Gala celebrating James Turrell and Christopher Wool – and dressed in Dior, bien sur – we knew we had to come along for the ride. Despite giving birth to the most adorable little boy just two months ago (we know, we wouldn’t believe it either), the blushing new mom looked as radiant as ever with an effervescent glow.

“Do you want to see what I’m wearing?” she asked, biting at her nails with her signature toothy grin. We nodded in unison as she unzipped the black garment bag in her suite at the Mandarin Oriental hotel to reveal the goods. “Black… white… and Dior,” she told us. LaCava’s intricately-knitted, corseted top was a true piece of art – the kind you reserve for a black, glossy frame placed above your mantel, but this kind of occasion is an exception. Besides, it’s kind of meta wearing a masterpiece inside a gallery filled with pieces by Turrell and Wool, right? And for the girl who’s style hasn’t changed much since the 90’s (she’s a little bit Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” meets Cher Horowitz from Clueless meets Reality Bites), we were expecting a playful outfit for a night at the museum.

“Raf Simons is known for his interest in art, and I think that that always informs everything,” she told us.

For a girl who was once likened to that of an “extra in the Lord of the Rings” by a evil classmate in school, – oh, kids… you know how horrible they can be – she’s certainly laughing now… all the way to the red carpet and dressed head-to-toe in Dior, nonetheless.
