Let Sofia Coppola’s Latest Collaboration Introduce You to This Heritage Cashmere House
Her capsule with Barrie exemplifies the director’s timelessly elegant style.

Maybe it’s the fact that I’m a twenty-something living in Brooklyn or perhaps the notion that I was raised on Lost in Translation, Marie Antoinette, The Virgin Suicides, and Somewhere, but if I see Sofia Coppola's name on anything, I'm automatically intrigued. Obviously, when I discovered she was collaborating with Scottish cashmere brand, Barrie, I feigned a gasp that would surely make Elle Fanning proud.
The cashmere and cotton military-style jacket is very Coppola-coded, and I absolutely love how she styled it on model Margaret Qualley with the cashmere trousers (an item perfect for Coppola's frequent international flights), flats, and decadent jewelry. Or the cashmere and cotton velvet-effect cardigan paired with a white t-shirt? C’est magnifique!
I think I love that she’s taking certain silhouettes that society has deemed “old” and showing us how fresh they can look—in a very CHANEL manner, actually. The director’s own style zeroes in on timeless elegance, as well-worn as that phrase is, few people exemplify the ethos better than she does. And that ethos is evident in these simple designs (crafted with Barrie creative director Augustin Dol-Maillot) with perfect details, from a wide-striped jumper to wool-infused leggings. The collaboration, by no accident, I’m sure—aligns with the debut of her latest film, Priscilla (a must-see if you haven’t yet). But be warned, it won’t come cheap. Most price tags hover somewhere in the low thousands, but you are paying for longevity in design and quality.

“I’m a big fan of Barrie,” says Coppola. “I love the great quality of their cashmere knitwear that I wear over and over again.” If you’re not familiar with Scottish brand Barrie, let this collaboration serve as your exceedingly stylish introduction. The house is one of the oldest cashmere manufacturers in Scotland. If you need further encouragement, they joined Chanel’s Métier d’Art in 2012. Barrie collections now infuse their own legacy with modern savoir-faire. Add them to your wishlist ASAP! The collaboration is now available to shop online at Barrie.com, in Barrie stores, and from select retailers.
