Miuccia Prada has always been a skirt person. Famously, in a 2006 interview, she stated: “The skirt for me is like a T-shirt.” For Mrs. Prada, the skirt is both a personal uniform and the mantle of her namesake house, which is why the silhouette was center stage on the Spring/Summer 2027 runway.

The skirt is a Prada obsession. And this season in Milan, Miuccia and Raf Simons interrogated the silhouette that has been a steadfast code of the house since its inception. This is Simons and Mrs. Prada's thing right now: to take an everyday garment and rework it a hundred times. For men's last season it was a simple pair of jeans. For women, the skirt, which was offered in all types imaginable. There were mini skirts and midi skirts, A-line, pleated and voluminous. Some were leather, PVC, wool, silk, taffeta; some were printed, some were plain. All were excellent and as individual as a Prada skirt typically is, even if ordinary.

But if Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons do one thing well, it's not just beauty, but functionality too. There were a series of skirts that fastened via velcro to appear like a wrap shape, with panels of floral-printed fabric peeking through like a pleasant surprise. Elsewhere, these wrap skirts were rendered in transparent PVC and layered over long shirt dresses almost like extended belts, all appearing thrown on and easy to move in.

Jewelry skirts were offered in gemstones that recreated the look of guipure lace. Translucent organza iterations with bows and crystals felt somewhat Miu Miu in the mix. And other techy developments saw cotton treated to resemble leather and suede. Whatever the style of the individual wearer, Simons and Prada are sure to have an option for you.

And then the pairings—predominantly skimpy bra tops which felt entirely modern and relevant, but Prada all the same (one thing Miuccia and Raf excel at is not denying us a sexy little trend piece each season). Some featured lace panels, others were red, some were bandeau style and others were deep v's with tiny little functioning nylon coin purses attached to the straps or armbands. Then there were vests, coats, and shirts to complement the whole thing, but only really as an aside. As lovely as they were, they were simply the supporting act for the skirts.

As Prada and Simons continued their plight to investigate how many different possibilities can be applied to a quotidian garment, the people-pleasing aspect was fully realized waking up this morning to see just how many ideas these two seem to produce as if almost effortlessly. How many versions of a skirt is too many versions? For Miuccia Prada, a lifetime of asking the question has led her to one conclusion: the possibilities are endless.
