The Case For Wearing Pajamas In Public

You’ve probably already worn pajamas in public. You just didn’t call it that. Slip dresses, eyelet tops, lace and cotton poplin—based on what we’ve seen on the runways season after season, the line between sleepwear and daywear isn’t blurring; rather, it’s nearly gone. Pajama dressing has become a widely accepted mode of dressing, and what’s telling is how second nature it’s become to wear them outside.

Let’s trace it back to how we got here. Since coming out of the pandemic, there’s been a heightened emphasis on comfort dressing. We got too used to being comfortable, and once that ship had sailed, there was no going back to anything that resembled restriction. But comfort for comfort's sake only holds appeal for so long. What we were looking for was a way to stay comfortable and relaxed without looking like we'd given up on looking put-together entirely. And this is particularly evident when the summer months roll out, when the sun is high and the heat is sweltering, and the last thing you want is to overthink anything, least of all your outfit.

There’s a certain sprezzatura in wearing sleepwear in public; a carefree effortlessness that still feels polished. But what made pajama dressing feel encouraged rather than frowned upon was the seal of approval from some of the biggest names and houses in fashion. Victoria Beckham’s slip dresses are a go-to of the chicest women in New York, London & Paris for eveningwear. Matthieu Blazy’s Coco Beach collection—the house’s annual summer capsule—offered a plethora of printed silk pants and breezy dresses that feel light and airy for every warm-weather occasion on the calendar. Even Phoebe Philo has leaned in with sexy sleepwear by way of silk shorts and slips for Spring/Summer 2026. And mid-tier brands, from the broderie anglaise dresses of Doen to the can’t-go-wrong basics of Leset, have made the trend just as accessible as it is aspirational.

But public pajamas don't necessarily translate to rolling out of bed and straight out to your appointment. Pajama dressing only works when it’s styled well and with intention. Think: a silk robe or caftan outfitted with trousers and a clutch for date night, lace-trimmed shorts paired with ballet flats and a straw tote for a Sunday at the Farmer’s Market, a worn-out graphic T-shirt and a pair of cotton shorts elevated by a kitten heel for an afternoon spritz downtown.
