15 Diamond Alternatives To Consider For Your Non-Traditional Engagement Ring

If you’re currently in the research (read: window shopping) phase of looking for your perfect engagement ring or simply exploring the vast array of options available, panic might be setting in. The choices seem limitless. Lab-grown diamonds have essentially joined the ranks of their natural counterpart, expanding the offerings of many renowned jewelry brands even further.. However, if either form of diamond isn't your preference, perhaps you’d like a more unique and unconventional stone. Non-traditional and non-diamond alternatives such as rubies, sapphires, gemstones, and pearls could be an ideal option.

Shane Clark, fine jewelry consultant and former fashion and jewelry editor at Brides emphasized that numerous stylish brides-to-be aim to maintain their distinct personal style rather than conform to trends. However, they still desire something unique and timeless that they’ll be able to cherish forever. According to Clark, “non-traditional and non-diamond engagement rings should not be regarded as mere trends, since many brides-to-be have been choosing these ring styles for years. They tend to gravitate towards options such as one-of-a-kind vintage rings or unique gemstones that have meaning, paired with intricately detailed bands.”

Why you should consider a non-diamond engagement ring

Other than personal style preference, consider a non-diamond engagement ring from an ethical standpoint. Lab-grown diamonds and gemstones are completely conflict-free. They’re designed and made in a sustainable way in a lab versus any type of process that can be harmful to the environment.

Also, non-diamond options can be notably more cost-effective compared to traditional diamonds, whether they're lab-grown or natural. Depending on factors like the stone's size, rarity, and design intricacies, a non-diamond ring can entail substantial savings, up to hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

And lastly, many unique stones hold special meanings. Susie Saltzman, fine jewelry designer and owner of Susie Saltzman and Reverence Jewelry, says the wide range of stunning stone options available to complement a bride's personal style ensures you'll find a ring that resonates with you.

“What makes colorful stones like emeralds and sapphires unique is that they differ from diamonds in terms of hardness and possess distinctive characteristics. They also have their own unique symbolism and meanings. These variations include differences in color saturation, shape, and various other details. Blue sapphires, in particular, have gained popularity as a trendy choice. Additionally, sapphires hold significance as birthstones, further adding to their symbolic meanings,” she explains.
