Maybe heartbreak feels good in a suit like this.

“We come to AMC Theatres to laugh, to cry, to care because we need that, all of us,” she says. “That indescribable feeling we get when the lights begin to dim, and we go somewhere we’ve never been before — not just entertained, but somehow reborn, together.” You know the script. You know the woman. You know the setting. And, thanks to some poignant Halloween costumes in 2023, you likely know the outfit. You may now buy the iconic Michael Kors Collection bedazzled pinstripe suit worn by Nicole Kidman in that AMC commercial, courtesy of Sotheby’s.

The esteemed auction house has partnered with the CFDA to launch an exclusive auction of looks designed by America’s favorite designers. Many of the looks in question have been worn by celebrities, ranging from the floral Oscar de la Renta Anna Wintour donned for the 2021 Met Gala to a Proenza Schouler dress from Kim Kardashian’s personal archives to one of the most iconic pantsuits in modern history.

This is a subset of Visions of America, a week-long auction series that includes a diverse array of superlative fine art, furniture, fashion, decorative arts, folk art, historical maps, books, whiskey, manuscripts, and more and celebrates American craftsmanship and culture.

CFDA: Defining American Style is now open for bidding online and opens in person on January 12th. The auction closes January 20th. The wool and cashmere crystal-embellished jumpsuit in question, part of Michael Kors’ 40th-anniversary collection from Fall 2021, is estimated to sell for $5,000 to $10,000, but we’re hoping the members of X, formerly known as the Twitterverse, can drive the price point much higher. (The commercial in which she wore the piece became a viral sensation for its quotidian obscenity—as if Nicole Kidman goes to the movies.) Here’s to hoping the deep-pocketed buyer can let us know if heartbreak feels good in a suit like this.
