If Valentine’s Day is red and pink, and Halloween is black and orange, then New Year’s Eve is sparkly. A lifetime ago, when I was paying my young millennial dues working at Urban Outfitters, the days between the 25th and the 31st were filled with helping teens (and their moms) decide between five versions of the same shimmery top. You get where I'm headed with this...

That said, my primary inspiration for this year’s makeup look is a disco ball, but if sparkles are not your thing, we’ve curated a few, more unexpected outfit ideas to inspire your evening getup. Whether you’re toasting at home or going out for a night in the city, here are three stylish ways to stand out, sans sparkle.

Pajama Set + Coat + Boots

One of my all-time favorite New Year’s Eve looks from pop culture is when Carrie throws on a sequined beret, heeled booties, and a full-length fur coat over her pajamas so she can catch a cab to spend the evening with a lonely Miranda. While this outfit is not sweats and ermine, I think it captures the spirit of that look. There is a cheeky elegance in wearing luxury pajamas on New Year’s Eve, perfect for a cozy night with your bestie or for sipping martinis somewhere swanky.

An all-cream look is a glamorous, sophisticated choice for New Year’s Eve, and a gorgeous backdrop for any jewelry you want to showcase.

While a completely sheer skirt in the middle of winter might seem crazy, New Year’s might be an excellent opportunity to be a tad daring if you’re in the mood to show a little skin.
