This Fashion Consultant Isn’t Afraid to Wear a Mini in the Winter

Here’s everything Michal Kurtis wears in a week.

Welcome to Style Diaries, a series where we research the physical manifestations of our closet tours IRL. We're asking friends and tastemakers to show us what they're *actually* wearing during the week and to provide a little insight into their thoughts on the current state of fashion. This week, we follow Berlin-based fashion consultant Michal Kurtis as she runs errands around the city, attends meetings and events, and even flies across the pond to visit family in Arizona.

What role does fashion play in your life? How does it serve you?

“I’m a fashion branding consultant and have worked for luxury brands like CHANEL, Dior, and Barneys New York for over 10 years. I’ve always known I was going to work in this industry and went to FIT—I took a rather traditional path of working my way up the corporate fashion ladder until I went freelance last year. I think a lot of my industry peers will tell you how fashion is one of the ultimate forms of expression, and I’d like to add to that by highlighting the energy I get from dressing up and feeling good about the way I look. Putting on a great outfit fuels my day, and I’m an all-around better person and better performer when I love my outfit.”

In terms of beauty, what does your go-to hair and makeup routine look like, and how does that change based on what you’re wearing?

“I haven’t changed my beauty routine in years. I wear the same 10 products with my skin care ( Augustinus Bader Rich Cream for life), and my trademark cat-eye liner (Stila Stay All Daytrust me) is the core of my look. The only element that will change with my outfit is whether I swipe a color on my lip or keep it clean with my go-to nude gloss from Hourglass.”

Day 1

What did you do that day?

“Probably nothing more than a walk around the block. Berlin went through an insanely long and strict lockdown, and my daily cappuccino pickup was my saving grace and only excuse to dress up—I didn’t waste the opportunity.”

Why did you select the pieces in this ensemble?

“If anyone thinks NYC is the capital of black outfits, I raise you: Berlin, Germany. Everyone wears all black, and I mean everyone. In the local spirit of rebellion, I go full color nearly every time. I actually prefer it, but now that it makes me stand out more—bring on the rainbow.”

What excited you about this look?

“I had just received this tweed CHANEL flap from my husband for my birthday—he picked it out himself! I loved the way my patriotic color combo played off the tweed. Plus, I’m always trying to make a prep-forward look feel cool.”

What did you do that day?

“I had back-to-back networking meetings. I get energy from making new connections and friends, and living in a new country is the best excuse to both reach out to people and accept invitations.”

Why did you select the pieces in this ensemble?

“I’m known to push the boundaries on what is seasonally appropriate in terms of dress. Putting half my closet away in storage never made sense for me—I always try to make off-season items work year-round, which also means I’m a hoarder and in constant need of more closet space.”

What excited you about this look?

“I had just purchased these silk shorts and wasn’t about to wait six months to wear them. I actually prefer them styled for winter than in a more predictable summer look. And, I think I pulled them off!”

Day 3

What did you do that day?

“I went over to a friend’s house for dinner. Nothing like a cozy home-cooked meal with good company.”

Why did you select the pieces in this ensemble?

“I was organizing my shoe closet and came across my favorite Sergio Rossi studded heels, which tragically hadn’t seen the light of day in a while. I wanted to take them out, even if it meant around the block.”

What excited you about this look?

“I love how I worked these neutrals together for a clean but playful look—with my trademark mini in the winter touch. Most of all, I was thrilled with how my rushed, sloppy self-blowout attempt resulted in these soft waves. I’ve never been able to redo this hair again!”

Day 4

What did you do that day?

“Having a mother-in-law who loves fashion has been such a gift. Not only do we bond over shopping trips, I help out with the buying for her boutique, Rebecca Concept Store, which is just down the street from my apartment (!).”

Why did you select the pieces in this ensemble?

“I’ll be honest, I picked out all the pieces. Rebecca has such great taste, and sometimes I’ll pop in the store just to try on what’s new and style some looks together under the guise of getting new content for her store’s Instagram account.”

What excited you about this look?

“You’ll probably guess, but being able to pull off linen in very un-linen weather. I’ll throw a coat over this and make it work. I also love how Bermuda shorts can be uncharacteristically chic!”

Gold Leather Sandals

Gianvito Rossi

Day 5

What did you do that day?

“I was getting ready to go to an event hosted by Dior to celebrate the opening of an exhibition they had in Berlin for the Lady Dior bag.”

Why did you select the pieces in this ensemble?

“I’m proud of the way I took a utilitarian jumpsuit and elevated it with pearls and layering. This was one of my favorite looks this year.”

What excited you about this look?

“This moment felt so surreal and full circle for me. One of my first internships was working in the Dior boutique in the Galleria mall in my hometown, Houston, and I continued to work for Dior when I moved to NYC to attend FIT. Fast forward 10 years, and I’m on their guest list!”

Day 6

What did you do that day?

“I flew to the U.S. to get in some family time. I was visiting my sister in Arizona, and my two brothers also flew in for a little reunion. We strolled around Scottsdale for lunch and shopping.”

Why did you select the pieces in this ensemble?

“I like the challenge of getting the most out of my one suitcase allowance. I packed strategically, so that I could mix and match my patterned pieces, and you can see that at play here.”

What excited you about this look?

“I’m wearing half the contents of my suitcase, and it works—ha!”
