If you've followed Lucy Rae McFadin and her style evolution, you're well aware of her affinity for a good accessory: shoes that make a statement, jewelry that often leans oversized and, of course, headwear that makes an outfit. So, it's no surprise that McFadin launched her very own headwear brand (today!)—it has actually been in the works for over a year. "Headwear has always been my favorite accessory, and as my collection grew over the years, I began to notice how surprisingly difficult the silhouettes I was drawn to were to find," McFadin says. "Most of my own collection is vintage, with a few designer pieces and finds from my travels. Still, there were so many styles I was searching for that simply didn’t seem to exist in the endless abyss of the internet." And from there, Ditsy was born.

As she began building her brand back in June 2025, trips to New York City's Garment District made a gap in the market even more apparent. "There are very
few milliners still working with headwear and much of the industry feels rooted in traditional ways of doing things, with very little infrastructure for emerging designers entering the space," she says. The result? McFadin felt fueled to create a new kind of headwear brand, one that was both elevated and attainable, was inviting rather than intimidating, and rooted in creativity and individuality. "I know hats can feel daunting to a lot of people, so part of my goal with Ditsy is to make headwear feel approachable again and inspire people to reach for a hat with the same instinct that they would a bag or a pair of shoes," McFadin says.

With her first Ditsy collection being made entirely out of jersey for soft and fluid pieces, McFadin sees more structured silhouettes and materials in her brand's future—and, she hopes to explore a different side of headwear with each forthcoming collection. "I want Ditsy to become a world of its own," she says. "One that people want to participate in and keep coming back to."

In honor of the launch of Ditsy, we caught up with founder Lucy Rae McFadin about what she gets up to between learning about trademarking, sales text, and other not-so-glamorous elements of starting a fashion business, putting her entrepreneurship and marketing degree from NYU to good use, and singlehandedly trying to reframe how consumers view headwear.

A deck of cards: "I keep a deck of cards in all my purses. The card game Shithead is my summer staple for dinner dates and time by the pool—it's a nice way to log off screens."

Down The Drain by Julia Fox: "I just started it so I can't speak too much on it yet, but I do love a brutally honest memoir!"

Movies: "I love to go to the movie theaters. My boyfriend and I frequent Nitehawk in

Ditsy Headwear Convertible Scarf: "Obviously a Ditsy piece! I've been reaching for the camo scarf a lot this week."

The RealReal bags: "I have a pretty severe addiction to the RealReal, and this Chanel purse and Balenciaga City Bag Suitcase have been calling my name."

Slipper mules: "I’ve been wearing a pair of Madewell black leather slipper mules ALL summer. They are so comfortable and chic. I sadly can’t find the link on Madewell anymore (I need a restock BAD), but I did find a similar pair."

Are.na: "Working on the brand, I did a lot of image resourcing on Are.na—it is a superior Pinterest once you figure it out. As I was building Ditsy’s website, I had to research a lot of brands' online stores and note what I was liking and not liking about each one of them."

YouTube: "As far as personal time on my device, I will always love YouTube. If I’m eating at home alone, 99% of the time my phone is propped next to me with a YouTube video on. Usually some sort of Vogue GRWM, Hot Ones, or a StassieBaby vlog lol."

What Are You Saving?

Magic Molecule Hypochlorous Acid Spray: "I use this spray religiously, so I always have at least one on me."

Cou Cou Intimates The Cami Slip & Los Angeles Apparel The Cheesecloth Collection: "These are both my summer uniform!"
