Style Hunting At LA Art Week
We scouted the best looks across gallery openings, fairs, and late-night art parties.

What people wear to Los Angeles art fairs, like Frieze and Felix, feels different from other art fairs around the world. This is partly because it's LA, where denim cutoffs are considered appropriate daywear for most occasions, and partly because Angelenos fall on a wide range of the style spectrum. Case in point: Past LA art fairs have seen attendees arrive in everything from jeans to cosplay to sculptural Comme des Garçons statements. LA style in general has been highly scrutinized, as if the fashion police were searching for any hint of looking too undone, or trying too hard.
Now in its eighth year, the LA art scene has finally found its style footing, trading anxious overthinking for self-assured cool. This past weekend, a surprise heatwave transformed the Felix pool into the week’s steamiest runway. This year's fairs revealed a city dressing with resilience, irreverence, and ease; taking on minimalism with plenty of personal style.

So, even as fairs take center stage during Art Week, the real gravity still belongs to the artists who live and work here."

Additionally, artists, curators, and collectors travel to LA from all around the world to visit the fairs, of which we have no shortage between Frieze, Felix, and Post-Fair; this dynamic movement throughout LA feels very exciting as it disrupts the city’s usual rhythm."

What's so special about art week in LA?
"LA Art Week is the one time a year the art world converges here and takes LA seriously as an art destination. Worlds collide, which is rare to see in LA, and you get to see the extents of the very diverse LA communities. The most fun is being able to go to house parties because LA homes are all so beautiful and weird in different ways, while also being able to see the art people chose to live with."
Marcella Zimmermann

What are you wearing?
"My full look is Rachel Comey! I actually just left her Melrose Place store, which is one of the best places to shop in LA. Beautifully curated, intimate, and very much in conversation with the city’s art and design community. Rachel actually studied art with Pascal, one of the founders of Broadway gallery which always shows at Frieze LA."
What do you do?
"I run Digital Counsel, a full-service, full-stack creative agency for the art world. I’m here celebrating the Julia Stoschek Foundation’s first U.S. exhibition, What A Wonderful World, which we led the marketing and digital strategy for. Wha makes LA Art Week special to you?
"The entire city feels like a decentralized museum, from Felix taking over the Roosevelt in Hollywood to artists taking over the former 99 Cents Store in Mid-City... then Mindy Seu hosting a salon in her own apartment. I love it all."

What makes LA Art Week special to you?
"I really look forward to art week in LA every year; there’s so much excitement around it. I love all of the fashion and people watching. But most of all, I value the opportunity to see the work of so many emerging artists. There’s so much art that ends up in private collections so the fairs are the only way to view the works in person, and explore all the new talent."
Summer Bowie

What are you wearing?
"Vince suit and loafers."
What do you do?
"Managing Editor at Autre Magazine."
What are you excited for?
"I’m excited for Nithya Raman’s mayoral campaign."
What makes LA Art Week special to you?
"Art Week is great because the city’s art institutions bring their strongest exhibitions, which makes up for the lack of curatorial intent within the fairs themselves. But the fairs are great because they bring everyone together from faraway places and provide the container for them to share ideas."
