D.S. & Durga co-founder Kavi Moltz can trace her affinity for fragrance back to a specific time and place: her grandmother's bedroom in New Delhi circa 1988. "8-year-old me would play around with the beautiful little bottles and jars on her dressing table. A white glass tub of Pond’s cold cream. A bottle of sandalwood-infused talcum powder. A delicate glass flacon of Joy by Jean Patou," Moltz says. "I'm always fascinated by things that transport me, especially back to India, and scent is the most powerful of them all."

Then, when Moltz met her husband David, the duo began playing with fragrance as an art form—and this experimentation ultimately led to them launching their very own fragrance brand, D.S. & Durga, back in 2008. "Together we realized we could build a brand that treated perfume less like beauty and more like manifestations of ideas," Moltz says. "Each scent was an opportunity to bottle a place, a story, or even an imagined experience."

The opportunities for storytelling seem to be endless for the brand. For D.S. & Durga's latest fragrance launching on August 25th, Kavi and David leaned on the sweet, gourmand scents that we've all been loving lately. "Our August launch is a lovely slice of date cake," Moltz says. "It's a grown-up gourmand of spiced date and warm vanilla that recalls the romance between NYC sweethearts in their 20s. It's a date night fume with a big attractive sillage."

Ahead, the lowdown on what Kavi Moltz consumes, browses, and shops when she's not creating the next cult favorite fragrance.

What's Entertaining You?

Audiobooks: "I listen to a lot of audiobooks, and I do this while I take my dog, Dracula, on very long walks. I can barely read books anymore, sadly, because of never having my reading glasses when I need them, and also, reading in bed puts me right to sleep. Currently listening to the Count of Monte Cristo by Dumas, and currently reading (the actual book!) The Summer Book by Tove Jansson. It takes place on a little island off the coast of Finland. It’s magical, simple, slow, and funny."

Music: "Music reigns supreme in our house. We start the morning with WQXR classical radio. I get my best work done by putting on headphones and listening to dance music, anything from New Order to Rufus du Sol, both on rotation. Listening to the new Strokes album and trying to get used to it. In the evening, nothing signals cocktail hour like Django Reinhardt. Always on rotation in the summer are our Italian Citrus and Jazmin Yucatan playlists, on our DSD Spotify profile."

Movies: "Last night, we watched Licorice Pizza and tonight we have plans to watch Rashomon by Kurosawa. We are also watching the show Shogun so you could say we are on a samurai kick."
