How to Dress Like You’re in the French Countryside
Even if you’re just cosplaying at the local bistro.

Summer heat is more palatable in some environments than others. Would you rather endure triple-digit temps on a subway platform or somewhere in the south of France? If you answered the latter but are unfortunately confined to the former, we can relate. But don’t let a little geography stand in your way—channel the mindset of the French countryside from the comfort of your own sidewalk. Aside from pouring yourself a crisp glass of Sauvignon Blanc, the best way to embody a French summer is through a really great outfit. Dress like Pablo Picasso with striped shirting, oversized white denim, and straw totes. Below, we’ve recreated three ensembles that scream “I’m in Provence,” whether you are really there or simply cosplaying at your local bistro.
Oversized Shirt + White Skirt + Mary Janes

Every oversized striped men’s button-down needs a dainty white midi skirt—or at least we believe so. To add a touch of youth to that combination, add socks and mary-janes, then top everything off with a pair of tortoiseshell sunglasses.
Blue Button Down + Shorts + White Sneakers

The slightly wide leg of these white denim shorts is the perfect complement to an airy blue shirt. The canvas sneaker keeps this outfit rooted firmly in the countryside rather than city streets—and the classic leather accessories don’t hurt either.
Racerback Tank + Wide Leg Jeans + Belt

This ensemble is a lesson in proportions; the slinky ribbed tank needs the oversized denim to offset the different shapes. To complete the look, add petite Onitsuka Tiger sneakers and a large black straw tote.
