As much as it pains me to say it, fall is right around the corner, and as we update our wardrobes in preparation, the bag trends from the Fall/Winter 2026 runways are on our psyches. Across collections from NYC to Paris, new silhouettes were in abundance as designers began to flex their ideas in the accessories department while settling into their roles helming their respective houses, after many debuts for Spring/Summer 2026.
Matthieu Blazy at Chanel, for example, has consistently updated our understanding of the perfect Chanel bag while subsequently creating viral runway moments. Similarly, Jonathan Anderson at Dior has best expressed his whimsy and creativity through accessories. Blazy and Louise Trotter—who is now his successor at Bottega Veneta—are leaning into supersized bags and novelty evening clutches, as is Jonathan Anderson at Dior, like always. While for designers like Pieter Mulier (who recently left Alaïa but not before introducing the iconic Le Teckel), Prada’s Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons, and Khaite’s Catherine Holstein, it’s all about reinventing the east-west bag for another season of success. We've been calling them “ludicrously capacious” bags since that perfect Tom Wambsgans line in Succession in 2023, and big bags are still trending after all this time. Evening clutches take on a life of their own this fall, with novelty shapes and silhouettes doing all the heavy lifting for a look. At Chanel Fall/Winter 2026 there were pomegranates on leather and gold chains, bean-shaped sequin and baroque clutches at Dior, Intrecciato faux books at Bottega Veneta, and floral-printed conch shells on chains at Chloé. The designers of today heard us say bring back whimsy, and that’s exactly what they did.

Go Long
The east-west silhouette has been a part of the bag trend cycle for a minute, partly thanks to Pieter Mulier’s ultra-skinny Alaïa Le Teckel bag, and plenty of other brands have caught on with the offering. The shape feels fresh—especially with new colour options, embellishments, and even the shrinking of beloved classics like the Balenciaga Le City Bag—contemporary, and perfect from day-to-night.

Bowling bags are great for so many things, especially travel and slightly longer commutes, and seeing them so much on the Fall/Winter 2026 runways proved this. A top handle feels elegant while the structure counters many of the more slouchy, hobo styles we are seeing right now, and designers like Miuccia Prada and Louise Trotter agree.

No Closure
Open zipper setups are perhaps not best practice on the Paris metro, however if you’re traveling by car, foot, or bike, the trend of an open bag is one that has historically felt very undone cool, not dissimilar to the ways the Olsen twins or Jane Birkin herself would wear a Birkin. There is something ultra-luxurious about leaving an expensive bag open, and the trends seem to reflect that this season.
