Dating within the creative industry gets a bad rap. There’s that lingering warning— “never date a creative”—fueled by stereotypes of warring egos, outfit critiques, and the idea that “dating a fashion boy is not for the weak.” TikTok creator Jean-Luc has even built a following parodying the dramatic realities of knowing (or loving) a so-called creative. And who could forget the 2023 Tinder horror story where a date allegedly stole a pair of Tabis?
But is it really that dire? I spoke to five creative couples who completely disagree—and say dating someone equally imaginative might actually be the ultimate power move.
Ahead, get to know five creative couples in NYC and how they make their relationships work.
India & Fred

Graphic designer and creative director, India, and actor, Fred, first met through Fred’s cousin Theo, who also happens to be one of India’s closest friends. The two became inseparable since meeting at university and though India knew she loved him first, Fred was the one to say it—making it a moment they’ll never forget.
How do you inspire each other?
India: "Fred’s outlook on life truly inspires me. He is constantly growing and evolving with a hunger to learn more about what the world has to offer. Recently he has committed to teaching himself Japanese and everyday I hear him practicing. I really admire his commitment and belief."
Fred: "India is one of the most hardworking people I know. She pours herself into her work and some of that energy and drive has rubbed off on me. I find focus to be fleeting, but seeing her consistently go big on her vision inspires me to do the same."
What’s one creative habit you’ve picked up from each other?
India: "Journaling. It might not necessarily be a 'creative habit' but it has helped me immensely, both personally and creatively. Fred has always had a natural talent for writing, so it made sense that he naturally took to journalling in times when he needed an outlet."
Fred: "Vision/mood boarding. India is big on Pinterest— which for a long time eluded me— but, after coming together to decorate and design our flat, I saw first hand how effective that kind of visual brainstorming can be. The girl’s got vision."

What’s the thing you love most about each other?
India: "His love for life and the people in his life. Fred is truly one of the most fiercely loyal, kind and loving people you will ever meet. His love has no boundaries and anyone who has the pleasure to meet him will feel his warmth instantly."
Fred: "India doesn’t take herself too seriously. Despite how she approaches her work with discipline and focus, she is never afraid to laugh at herself. India doesn’t care about trying to look cool, which to me makes her the coolest. Nothing is ever that deep and we have so much fun living like this. This is what I love most about her."

Why do you think creative couples go together better?
India: "A problem shared is a problem halved - and ‘creatives’ famously come up against problems and frustrations when it comes to expressing themselves and finding fair compensation for their work. Creative blocks often just need perspective—something that’s hard to find alone. A partner who sees when you’re heading down an unhelpful path can gently redirect you with clarity and care. In that sense, everyone is creative— problem-solving is creativity —and in life, two heads are always better than one."
Amy & Sam

Amy, a fashion and lifestyle creator and disability advocate, and Sam, an indie rock singer-songwriter, first connected on TikTok. Sam made the first move by sliding into her DMs before making the trip to meet her in person, and eventually being the first to say “I love you."
How do you inspire each other?
Amy: "Sam is incredibly driven. His ambition is incredibly infectious so he inspires me to never settle for less, and always achieve what seems impossible. I don’t think I would be freelance without that mindset behind me and backing me 24/7."
Sam: "Amy is incredibly patient and resilient. Her confidence and ability to light up any room inspires me every day. Instead of letting her disability define her, she uses it to uplift others and encourage us all to be ourselves."
What’s one creative habit you’ve picked up from each other?
Amy: "Content creation. I was at university while Sam was creating on TikTok, so I gave it a try for fun and creative expression—never expecting it to become a career."
Sam: "Having more color in my life. Since meeting Amy, I’ve experimented more with fashion, and I feel more stylish."

What do you love most about each other?
Amy: "I love Sam’s unwavering support for his family. His dedication and love for those closest seeps from him. You might hear it in some of his songwriting, but for the most part it’s hidden. I think that makes it feel even more special, it just means he loves me even louder."
Sam: "I love that she is extremely empathetic and caring. She has helped me to understand my emotions more, which I think a lot of men struggle with."

Why do you think creative couples go together better?
Amy: "I think it's because it helps us work as a team, we understand how our brains work. We help each other so much. For example, if Sam needs help writing a song I’ll sit down with him and come up with more synonyms or rhyming. Likewise, he will help me with filming videos or taking a photo."
Sam: "Being a creative means work never really stops, and it always comes home, too. That’s why its important you’re with someone that understands that. It also requires a lot of networking and showing up to things together, so having a creative partner that is willing to help and show up as a team is a bonus."
Katya & Ash

Katya, a creative workshop producer, and Ash, a puppet designer, met at a pub near their old university through a shared friend group. Katya knew almost instantly that Ash was going to stick around for life—but Ash was the first to say “I love you” just two weeks in. The two married in 2024, and happily, the rest is history.
How do you inspire each other?
Katya: "I love bouncing ideas off each other. I find the creative flow that we get into when working on the same project or offering each other advice so valuable. Especially because we had to learn how to work together."
Ash: "Katya inspires me daily in the small things. Their endless curiosity and eye for celebration reveal beauty in every nook and cranny—moments I’d likely miss, given my cynical nature."
What’s one creative habit you’ve picked up from each other?
Katya: "With Ash’s support, I’m learning not to buckle under the pressure to be constantly creative. Funny, since he struggles with it too—but as a partner, he’s great at teaching me to relax and let go."
Ash: "Katya helps me to find joy in the material itself. Hearing how they speak about clay has inspired me to tune out the noise of the process and focus on the actual doing."

What do you love most about each other?
Katya: "Ash’s morals stand out. He has a strong moral compass and follows it in friendships, family, and creative work, even when it’s hard—whilst I sometimes look for the easy way out."
Ash: "The thing I love most about Katya is their care and compassion for others. The empathy and patience they have for people constantly has me in awe."

Why do you think creative couples go together better?
Katya: "I think creativity, similarly to queerness and neurodivergence, pushes you to question the world and your place in it a bit more. Because of that, the relationships you build don’t conform to normativity; they are unique to who you and your partner are."
Harley & Andrew

Harley, a fashion and lifestyle creator, and Andrew, lead singer of rock band Basement, met through a mutual friend Andrew had known for over a decade. Both had recently moved to Brighton after breakups and ended up as accidental roommates. The two were just friends…until three months later, when the romance snuck in. Whilst in the middle of hanging a framed print, Andrew said “I love you” catching Harley by a sweet surprise, because she felt exactly the same.
How do you inspire each other?
Harley: "He inspires me to put myself out there more and have confidence in my work. If I can watch him singing in front of huge crowds then I can get over myself and post a video on TikTok."
Andrew:"Harley inspires me with the time and passion she pours into what she cares about. Seeing her dedication lights a fire under me and reminds me why effort matters — it’s amazing to watch."
What’s one creative habit you’ve picked up from each other?
Harley: "The ability to work on multiple projects at once without feeling like my brain is going to explode."
Andrew: "I struggle to plan my days without a clear project, but watching Harley organize her workload has helped me set deadlines and stay on top of what I need to get done."

What’s the thing you love the most about each other?
Harley: "I love how kind, caring and patient he is. He treats every single person he meets with so much kindness and respect. Every single person I ever introduce him to— without fail—always comments on it."
Andrew: "Her passion for the things that matter to her—whether it’s people, communities, or causes—is inspiring. Even in her work, she finds ways to raise awareness or support those in need, and seeing her dedication makes me want to do more too."

Why do you think creative couples go together better?
Harley: "Two creative people in a relationship can be the perfect pairing—you understand each other’s work and passions on a deeper level. Creative work isn’t always taken seriously, but with an equally creative partner, spending hours choosing the right font, color, or outfit doesn’t feel silly. Instead of judgment, you get insight, collaboration, and advice drawn from their own experience—the kind that can pull you out of a creative rut."
Andrew: "There’s a shared understanding of what drives us, which means we give each other space and grace when our passions take priority—while continuing to champion and support each other creatively."
Dino & Ryan

Dino, a fashion writer for Glamour, and Ryan, an editorial project manager, first matched on Tinder back in 2017. Ryan ghosted Dino at first, but Dino decided to make a bold move and reach out on Instagram. Their first date was at Dalston Superstore on a Monday night—a rogue choice, but clearly the best one, because they’ve been together ever since. They even said “I love you”’ at the same time—how romantic.
How do you inspire each other?
Dino: "Ryan’s ability to share emotions and uplift other people is what strikes me the most. He is also quite persistent with his ideas and will stick with them regardless of what people tell him."
Ryan: "Dino is vivacious, confident and loud, which is everything I'm not. His bold personality inspires me to come out of my shell more, advocate for myself and care less about what people think."
What’s one creative habit you’ve picked up from each other?
Dino: "He’s changed how I watch TV. What was once passive is now much more analytical—I pay close attention to elements like writing, casting, and costumes. Working with TV and film studios on awards materials, I can see how his creativity has influenced my own."
Ryan: "Seeing beauty in the everyday. When we first met, I couldn’t understand why he photographed everything—quirky shop signs, half-eaten birthday cakes, little trinkets in charity shops. Over time, I’ve started doing the same."

What’s the thing you love the most about each other?
Dino: "The way he expresses his love is very raw and honest. He’s super open and doesn’t hold back, which I particularly love as someone who keeps most things inside my own head. What I most love about Ryan is the thing I wish I had myself."
Ryan: "It feels so cliché to say but it's the way he makes me laugh. Even after eight years, we still find ways to bring each other joy through laughter. We laugh through good times, bad times, during arguments, after arguments. It really is a tonic!"

Why do you think creative couples go together better?
Dino: "If you asked me a few years ago, I wouldn’t be entirely sure that creative couples do go better together. But after almost 9 years, I understand that there’s a great shorthand in understanding the individuality of each other’s paths. As a creative, the path to success or growth isn’t linear. I don’t think this is the case in most other industries, but with Ryan beside me, I don’t need to justify my choices - he will be there to support whatever I do and trust me with knowing what’s the best next step, regardless of what it might look like at first."
Ryan: "There’s a mutual understanding of each other’s work that bleeds into your day-to-day life, whether that shared interests or the way that you communicate. It also just feels more collaborative. You can bounce ideas off one another and sense check things together, which helps to build trust. You almost rely on someone in a different way."
