If "Never Judge a Book by Its Cover" Was a Home
Cara Woodhouse's recent project is where modern meets traditional.

Many wouldn't view an early-1900s New Jersey home complete with looming columns and traditional white exterior as an opportunity for modernity, but that approach is exactly what designer Cara Woodhouse prides herself on—unexpected juxtaposition. In a recent project of hers for a client's new summer home, Woodhouse subverted the traditional bones by implementing bright color pops set against a stark black-and-white palette alongside clean lines. She outfitted the pre-existing molding in a glossy black hue and painted the wood floors in such a fashion that you would never guess they weren't marble. Intrigued? So were we. Below, we've asked Woodhouse to disclose her creative process, and what we found was a rather interesting mix of high and low.
