When someone proves they have an affinity for aesthetics, we tend to trust their eye as it migrates across other realms as well. In other words, our favorite fashion insiders tend to expertly curate not only their closets, but their interiors, lifestyles, bathroom cabinets, kitchen cupboards—you get the picture. To help kick our brains into gear as we fashion our own wish lists, we decided to tap three industry insiders to share the items they’re coveting and their outlook on gift giving this season—remember to shop small and shop local! Lucky for us, these style virtuosos are privy to vast networks and are therefore turning us on to some of the coolest emerging designers and small brands out there.

“Small businesses have been hit hard by the pandemic, with many jobs lost and many companies fighting to stay afloat. I haven’t been buying much these days beyond necessities, but in cases when I have purchased something nonessential, I’ve been mindful of who and what I want my money to support right now—which has led me to shopping pretty much exclusively from small, independently owned brands. It’s been a privilege to support small brands I love during this challenging time, and I plan on continuing to do so during the holiday season both in terms of gifts I’m buying for family members and my own ‘wish list.’ Even in non-pandemic times, my family doesn’t usually do a lot of presents, but I still enjoy the excuse to get creative with gift ideas—even if it’s something homemade (I’m a big fan of gifting people long letters where I write down everything I love about them. It’s corny, but always a home run). Without further ado, here are some things I’ve been eyeing.”

ARQ High-rise Undies

“All the ARQ underwear, all the time. I’m truly obsessed with this underwear, and my dream is to own a pair in every color. Each is insanely comfortable and made of thick, organic cotton.”

$28

Míe Rio Top

“The Rio Top from Míe—an amazing brand based in Nigeria where local seamstresses and artisans make all their clothes. This top is so cool and makes me excited to go on vacation again (someday!).”

$95

Estelle Colored Wine Stemless Glasses, Set of 6

“A set of pale green stemless wineglasses from Estelle Colored Glass. This company has beautiful, practical wineglasses and cake stands in every shade of pastel.”

$160

Entireworld Organic Cotton Solid Socks

“I know everyone is obsessed with the sweats from Entireworld (and to be clear: same), but the underrated BEST THING they make is socks. I have a couple pairs already, and I’m always sad when they’re in the wash.”

$15

Studio Onyva Maude Vest

“This small brand sews all their pieces by hand in Copenhagen, and I happen to be a huge sucker for Liberty prints.”

$248
Bonus: “A donation to World Central Kitchen on someone’s behalf would be such a nice gift. This organization is tackling emergency food relief during the pandemic by working with restaurants directly to help them keep their doors open while also feeding people in need.”

Adam Katz Sinding

Photographer

“Personally, I don’t love getting gifts. I find it a bit awkward, but probably because I’m horrible at picking gifts for people myself. But on the few occasions where I’ve received something really wonderful and thought through, it’s a very, very nice feeling.”

Descente Allterrain x ByBorre Layered Transform Track Jacket

“I don’t buy clothes very often anymore, but ByBorre and Descente Allterrain are two of my very favorite brands, and when I tried this jacket on at Sane Communications in London, I was STOKED. I think this may be the best garment for REAL life that I’ve worn in a long, long time.”

$1,315

Vitamix Ascent A3500i Blender

“I don’t cook or...well...I don’t cook well. My idea of cooking is frying up some eggs and plopping them on a plate, then spending the next 20 minutes cleaning up grease splatters off the range. WHAT IF I could just make smoothies for every meal for the rest of my life... Imagine. Just imagine!”

$525

Nikon Z 7II Mirrorless Digital Camera

“I’ve shot Nikon my whole life. I currently have the first iteration of Nikon’s first foray into mirrorless cameras (The Z 6). But with this second-generation mark ii, it seems to solve all the quirks, which I dislike about my current setup. Someone needs to buy it for me, though... Anyone?”

$3,000

Good Weather Ti Goat Frameset

“OK, so they say the equation for how many bikes one should own is n + 1 (n being the number of bikes one currently owns). SO...I have n bikes right now (n currently totaling seven), so I need that plus one. Good Weather is a shop in Seattle (I’m from Tacoma and lived in Seattle for 10 years). They are good people, and now they make this good bike. Again...now someone needs to buy it for me. Let’s start crowdfunding?”

$2,750

Copenhot Gift Card

“My friend Emil recently got me into jumping into the harbor/sound in the areas in and around Copenhagen each morning. It’s horrible and incredible at the same time. The worst part of getting into the freezing water is getting OUT of the freezing water. What if I could just pop into the sauna...how cool (hot) would that be!?”

“The holidays are always a special time for my family and I. We enjoy staying home and appreciate a slower-paced day together. Seeing my son’s face light up during the holidays is such a joy. I also love receiving special gifts as well.”

Estelle Decanter & Glassware Set

“The founder of Estelle Colored Glass, Stephanie Summerson Hall, has named the collection in honor of her grandmother, Estelle. The carefully hand-blown colored glass is made by glass artisans in Poland and is truly the perfect gift for my bar area.”

$345

Change Cadet Bundle

“I love thoughtful gifts with a positive cause in mind, especially the Change Cadet t-shirts. Change Cadet is a consulting firm founded by Dr. Akilah Cadet in Oakland, CA, that offers a broad array of services that support diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in the workplace. All proceeds support the public and social media anti-racism education provided by Dr. Akilah Cadet.”

$90

Pattern Beauty Deluxe Essentials Bundle

“I love everything about self-care, and Pattern Beauty has the perfect bundle for some hair love.”

$274 $206

Njideka Akunyili Crosby I Refuse to Be Invisible

“I collect art that speaks to me and love prints, books, or paintings by amazing artists during the holidays. Njideka Akunyili Crosby is a Nigerian-born visual artist known for creating collage and photo-transfer-based paintings that represent the cultural terrain between her adopted home in America and her native Nigeria.”

$299

McMullen Styling Experience

“I love unique experiences, especially a full-service shopping party. Ultimately, this gift is perfect for anyone that wants a safe and COVID-friendly environment while discovering their favorite pieces. Available at our Oakland and Palo Alto, CA, shops is our McMullen Styling Experience.”
