They say the best ideas come to you at the most unexpected times, and for designer Lucy Akin, it was during a visit to a psychic. “I owned the store Shop Super Street in Los Angeles, and during a psychic session, [I was asked] why I wasn’t designing my own clothing,” she remembers. “During a weekend at home sick, I dreamed up the first five pieces that I felt I couldn’t find anywhere. I made the samples, put them in the store, and they sold right away. I put them on our website, and that’s when my friend at Vogue called me asking about what the line was. I told her to give me a month to put a full concept and idea together, flew on credit card points with a few models to Acapulco [where] we shot our first lookbook, and the rest is history.”

Everything from Akin’s Ciao Lucia line is made in Los Angeles, and it’s quite honestly the warm-weather clothing of our dreams. Case in point: A quick scroll through the Ciao Lucia IG, and you’ll be running, not walking, to order an Aperol spritz and dream of the beach. Silky shells, flowy dresses, cinched tops, and swimsuits are the brand’s expertise—and everyone from Gigi Hadid to Margot Robbie have been snatching it up.

“The resort collection  is our best evolution of Ciao Lucia yet,” Akin says. “There are so many easy silhouettes that are flattering and classic. I started designing the collection last February, so I was in the thick of winter and longing for summer vacation. I was dreaming of the South of France and tied a lot of the Mediterranean colors into the collection.” The designer pulls a lot of her inspiration from movies and books, and for the resort wear, she turned to Pierrot Le Fou, Catch a Thief, and Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

But Akin isn't stopping at resort wear. Next up is fall. “I think the biggest hurdle will be showing what the Ciao Lucia girl is wearing in the fall [while] still embodying this vacation aesthetic,” the designer confesses. “For me, fall is about layering those pieces with big cozy sweaters. I’m excited to see how it evolves—we’re just starting to design it now!” Bring it on.
