A Few of Our Favorite Views in New York City

Having your go-to spot is essential to life in the city. In collaboration with Sunglass Hut.

favorite views in new york city
It sounds cheesy, but there are days where living in a city like New York feels particularly trying—maybe you waited for three subway trains before actually being able to get on, or you’re having an impossible time finding an apartment that doesn’t cost your entire paycheck nor look like it could belong to a prospective serial killer. That said, in those moments, there are certain views that make it all worth it. There are dozens of attractions and historic sites that can qualify—you probably know them well—but often what ends up meaning the most to us are places that feel intimate or personal in some way.

In such a massive, and at times overwhelming, city, feeling like you’re able to carve out a space of your own is integral. And whether it’s a steaming bowl of our favorite pasta or lying face-down in our favorite massage table at an under-the-radar joint, we’re all about taking in the view, wherever that might be. Doesn’t hurt if said view is shaded by a pair of signature Ray-Ban from Sunglass Hut—another self-preservation tool that’s essential in a big city, if you ask us. Toss in a pair of headphones, and there are no two items more necessary for creating your own little bubble while working your way down a few city blocks. Here, we asked three of our staffers for their favorite views in the city—from our favorite happy-hour spot to a neighborhood self-care retreat.

Favorite NYC View:The greenery at PlantShed

“PlantShed is so light and airy that you can’t help but feel happy when you visit! I was looking for the perfect plant to liven up my apartment when I first found this spot, and it is staffed by the sweetest people. Who doesn’t love a smiling person handing you the cutest bouquet of unique flowers? I luckily work down the block and love to take a midday break to shop the plants and flowers and maybe grab a matcha for a midday pick-me-up. You’ll always find me leaving with bright flowers in hand and Ray-Ban sunglasses on.”

Favorite NYC View: Enjoying a treat at Little Cupcake Bakeshop while people-watching on the streets of Soho.

"Little Cupcake Bakeshop is the cutest bake shop on Prince St. They’re famously known for their Brooklyn Blackout chocolate cake and the first time I tried it, I was hooked! As someone with a major sweet tooth, I’ve always found bakeries to be homey and comforting. When I was little, my mom would always take me to this Dominican bakery in Washington Heights after a doctor’s appointment to get a pastelito de queso — cheese empanada — and un chocolate — hot chocolate. It was my favorite part of our Saturday mornings in the neighborhood! Now every time I visit a small mom and pops bakery it reminds me of those quiet Saturday mornings. My favorite time to go to Little Cupcake Bakeshop is in the middle of the afternoon on a weekday — with my sunglasses on to block the afternoon light — to grab a cupcake and a hot chocolate for an afternoon pick-me-up."

Favorite NYC View: A platter of oysters at Sel Rrose

“I love coming to Sel Rrose during their oyster happy hour - there’s a nice quietness, at least before the evening rush. I used to work here so I’m still close with most of the bartenders and servers - it feels like a second home and these people feel like family. I learned a lot working at Sel and cherish those lessons and memories. I’ll never forget the first time I walked into this space - I remember feeling inadequately unchic compared to the sexiness the space exudes. The rawness of the concrete walls juxtaposed with the sleek grey leather banquets and fogged glass walls is perfection. I can’t think of a better place to people watch behind a chic pair of sunglasses or grab a quick cocktail.. on a date with myself, or maybe someone else.. ”
