how to shop for denim online

We’re well into the era of shopping from our phones or laptops in lieu of going into a brick-and-mortar. It’s how we get to buy some of our favorite international brands without also investing in a plane ticket. Or save time in our hectic schedules when getting to a store just isn’t the most convenient. But some items can be a little daunting to purchase online when fit and cut are so important—namely, jeans. It’s why we’ve put together a handy guide with the help of Reformation’s founder, Yael Aflalo, that will make shopping for denim online easy and non-intimidating.

Note your measurements

It may seem like a daunting task, but measuring yourself from head to toe will make online shopping a breeze. We recommend taking down your waist, hips, inseam, and preferred rise. Just make a note of all your inches in your phone so that you have it at your fingertips.

Check the size chart

Even if you’re confident you’re a size 8, don’t overlook the brand’s size chart. It’s best to double-check each brand’s individual measurements, as sizing can vary depending on where the garment was manufactured. Base your choice on the measurements, rather than the size.

Fabric is important

“The perfect pair of jeans is the one that you look and feel your best in,” says Aflalo. “You want them to be structured, but not too tight or stiffcomfy but not baggy and shapeless; and flattering for your body. Looking for jeans online can be tough, because we’re naturally inclined to want to try them on. When buying online, I pay close attention to materials, cut, and style.” Pay attention to the amount of elastane (try to go for sustainably-sourced, since it’s a synthetic fiber), as it will dictate the stretch in the fit.

Read the comments

Real people with real opinions! The best way to gain some insights on the quality and the fit of an item is by reading the comments or reviews.

Take advantage of the customer service

“Our team spends a lot of time fitting styles that accommodate a variety of body types. We try every style on at least three different body types and take into consideration natural waist, high-hip, and low-hip measurements to gauge the perfect fit. We have our size guide online to help you find your exact size, and when you’re really in doubt, you can contact our Customer Love team—they’re pros at guiding you to the right pair of jeans,” suggests Aflalo. Tap the experts—that’s what they are there for!

Go for a tried-and-true fit

“Finding the perfect pair of jeans can be tricky, so if you’ve found a style that you love and works for you, I’d say stick with it. But if you want something new, you can always mix it up with different washes and details,” she says. “A classic pair of blue jeans is a must and perfect for everyday. A super-flattering, rigid denim that looks almost exactly like a perfect pair of vintage jeans is my go-to, like our Cynthia High Relaxed Jean. And a pair of black High & Skinny Jeans is great for a casual day-to-night look.”
