7 Sunscreens That Won’t Break You Out

All made for your face.

By: Hannah Baxter

Everybody knows how tough it can be to find a quality sunscreen that doesn’t leave you with irritated, broken-out skin. And given the range of ingredients in different formulas, it can feel like a guessing game to pick one that works for you. Luckily, I’ve done the legwork over the past dozen or so years, ever since I realized that you don’t have to slather a body-specific sunscreen over your sensitive complexion (and it doesn’t need to sting in order to work). Since a new product tends to give me a nice, fat pimple right in the middle of my cheek if it doesn’t agree with my skin, I’ve compiled a short (but growing) list of all the facial sunscreens I use year-round. Check out my seven favorites below.

Tatcha Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 35, $65

My end-all, be-all sunscreen, especially when I want to wear makeup. It gives your skin a blurred, mattified look, and the texture really is silky-smooth. It’s worth every penny, in my opinion.

Solid & Striped Face Sunscreen, $28

My latest sun-care discovery, Solid & Striped’s new face sunscreen has a practically weightless texture and feels much more like a serum than a chalky cream. I barely feel like I have anything on, and my skin is happy as a clam.

Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen, $32

Supergoop continually makes some of the most skin-friendly sunscreens on the market right now. I always throw this guy in my bag for an afternoon touch-up, and because it’s oil-free, my skin doesn’t feel congested with the added layer of product.

Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense, $34

Of all these formulas, this Drunk Elephant one is on the thicker side, so I blend it with my moisturizer in my palm. For a physical sunscreen, it feels exceptionally comfortable on my skin and is fairly gentle.

Glossier Invisible Shield, $25

Glossier’s sunscreen soaks into the skin almost immediately, and I love that the added antioxidants help protect the skin from free-radical damage. It’s a two-for-one special.

La Roche Posay Anthelios Ultra Light Fluid Facial Sunscreen, $30

My sunscreen champion, and what I have more bottles of in my apartment than any other, is La Roche Posay. This face formula is crazy lightweight and offers water resistance, so it’s perfect for the pool, beach, or a particularly sweaty commute.

Coola Classic Organic Face Sunscreen Lotion, $32

This was my very first foray into face-specific sun care, and I will always go back to it. Coola’s mineral formulas are gentle and long-lasting, plus they’re reef-safe.
