The Buyers Behind Fashion’s Buzziest Boutique Predict What You’ll Wear This Spring

Our crystal ball sees lots of suiting, neutrals, and teeny, tiny bags in your future. In collaboration with Forty Five Ten.

Trends
fortyfiveten buyers predict spring 2019 fashion trends
We’ll admit—from our vantage point, “trend reports” occasionally illicit an eye roll. It *all* comes back, as everyone’s mom likes to point out—and when it feels like you’re predicting the return of metallics for the umpteenth time, it can start to get stale. After all, “florals for spring” were vilified by Miranda Priestly for a reason.

But with new trends increasingly emerging with each flick of your scrolling wrist, occasionally they call for a field guide. Which is where our friends at Forty Five Ten come in.

The forward-thinking boutique—which hails from Texas but recently made an impossible-to-miss debut in New York at Hudson Yards with modern design throughout and a Snarkitecture-built, glass-brick facade—can only be described as conceptual. From the designers they stock, to the pieces they carry, to the vibe in their stores, if you’re looking for what’s next, it’s best to look to Forty Five Ten.

Thus, when it came time to compile a trend report of our own, we turned to the boutique’s buyers for an insider take on what’s coming next (and may have maxed out our credit cards in the process).

Miranda would approve. We think.

Pink

In case you were wondering, pink has exactly zero plans of going anywhere this season. And frankly, we’re here for it.

This time around we’ll be changing things up by broadening our palette and picking up on hues from every part of the shade spectrum—sometimes all at once.

There’s the breezy, palest pink Gabriela Hearst dress, the only thing we want to wear to take in every sunset for the rest of time, while Valextra’s mini bag done up in the sunny flamingo is all we need to convince us to whip out our credit cards. Finally, Suzanne Rae’s bubble-gum-pink platform Velcro sandals to pair with everything from delicate little slip dresses to cut-offs and tees.

Power Suiting

We’re suckers for a good suit. The big difference with this season’s iterations? The bold hues and nuanced silhouettes we’re seeing them in.

This striped Calvin Klein jacket manages to blur the lines between suiting and sportswear, while a sky-blue number from Partow features a more sculpted jacket with a nipped-in waist. Meanwhile, Rosie Assoulin’s fire-engine-red pin-striped iteration brings together a few of our favorite things: back pleating, a plunging neckline, and wide lapels, for a head-to-toe look that’s equally bossy and dressy.

Volume Play

It wasn’t all that long ago that the word ruffle could single-handedly conjure up images of curtains or baby bassinets (or potato chips). Fast-forward a few killer collections later, and it’s evident that there’s very much something in the water with this one. First and foremost, we look to Marc Jacobs, whose fantastical take on the motif has been inescapable this spring—at the very least, if that giant pink bow doesn’t make you happy, you maybe don’t have a heart. Rosie Assoulin, meanwhile, went for a less literal interpretation, best demonstrated by these Olympic blue patent trousers. For the faint of heart (or die-hard romantic), there’s Batsheva’s metallic tiered skirt.

Neutrals

One of the most wearable trends to emerge from this season? A wide-reaching palette of neutrals, intended to be worn all at once, all together (hint: it’s also one of our go-to tricks for looking instantly pulled together with minimal effort). The trend’s trickling in via the usual classics, like this neutral trench, made new with contrasting paneling.

We’ll also be stocking up on our favorite summer shoe—a strappy sandal with a block heel to stomp around in all summer—in a camel hue from Maryam Nassir Zadeh. Then, from Adeam, a striped sleeveless shift dress to take you from days at the office to clambakes or whatever people allegedly do in the summer.

Little Bags

A trend we truly hope never ceases to exist (despite having reached all but SNL status), if only because they still make us squeal. Seriously—our reaction to Loewe’s Honey, I Shrunk the Kids treatment of their signature Gate bag was an audible one. Ditto for this sweet little red number from Mansur Gavriel (who know a thing or two of cult-status handbags) and a buttery-soft rosy leather top-handle one from Marni.

Embellishment

We’re firmly in the “more is more” camp of things—making this trend a clear favorite. We love embellished details most when they’re being used to upgrade or add new interest to a wardrobe staple—or even a corporate one. Case in point? This Margiela skirt with grey feather trim peeking out from the hem. While Christopher Kane’s crystal-covered denim jacket is admittedly (a lot) less corporate, the sparkle gives it an entirely new feel. Wear it with a pair of Area’s pink crystal-studded hoops if you’re feeling especially OTT.

Sheer

While sheer can certainly be sexy, showing flashes of skin doesn’t need to feel overtly showy, and playing off that dynamic is a reason why this trend is one of our favorites right now. Look no further than a lush high-neck blouse from Marc Jacobs for that exact vibe, with not an ounce of theatricality and drama spared. Ditto a flowing sheer Jil Sander skirt with the teensiest bit of slip peeking out underneath. Should you be looking for a real showstopper to fit the bill, Sies Marjan has just the thing: an embossed croc coat made up of a gummy-texture plastic in the happiest lemon hue.
