The Bath Salt Recipe That Relieved My Stress and Gave Me Great Skin

How I became a bath time convert.

The last time I took a bath was probably when chokers and butterfly clips were à la mode (the first time around). That is, until a few weeks ago (unless, of course, Jacuzzis count—do they?). See, I never really saw the appeal of sitting in a tiny pool of water that may or may not be full of that day’s filth, and honestly, the idea of having an extra 30 minutes to spare doing nothing was, in my mind, a fantasy.

But recently I’ve really tried to carve out time in my day just for “me.” That comes in different forms, whether it’s getting back into my workouts, foam rolling—which I’ve started doing every morning and loving it—or watching mindless TV (er, Vanderpump Rules), and now, because of my new obsession with essential oils (and what they can do for the mind and my skin), baths have become that, too. It wasnt until I took my first bath in a long time that I realized a quick rinse before was the key to getting over my aforementioned gall with sitting in the tub. I try not to put too much pressure on myself to squeeze it into my day—I think that’s why it’s been great at actually chilling me out.

Here is one of my favorite therapeutic bath balms, courtesy of  S.W. Basics founder Adina Grigore, that has given me the best skin of my life while also totally chilling me out.

What you need:

1⁄2 cup coconut oil (and you can definitely use more—you can never use too much coconut oil)
1-2 tbsp sea salts of your choice
7 drops lavender essential oil
5 drops eucalyptus essential oil

Adina Grigore’s Bath Salt Tips

“Always use plant or seed oil in the bath, otherwise your skin can dry out. This is particularly true when using a bath salt. Coconut oil is a great choice because it melts quickly in the tub while still providing substantial skin-coating moisture. Lavender and eucalyptus are an awesome functional combination for treating a stressed-out body and mind and for helping you relax while fighting off infections. This is also a great combination if you have a headache, as lavender has been cited as an effective alternative treatment for migraines.

“If you’re bored by (or don’t like) lavender, don’t worry. There are three other essential oils that are great for the bath. A sort of surprising one is clary sage, which has mood-boosting, hormone-balancing effects, plus it can help ease menstrual cramping. (I find baths are great when you’re PMS-ing.) The other is rose otto, which has anti-depressant qualities and smells just amazing. Moreover, research has found that it can enhance your skin’s permeability, which is great if you’re using salts to help heal skin conditions or increase circulation.”
