9 Luxurious Candles That Prove They’re Not Just a Fallback Gift Anymore

We found some of the chicest under-the-radar options for the holidays.

When was it decided that the lowly candle would become the thoughtless, last-minute gift you bring to a white elephant exchange at the office? Although Saturday Night Live might have you believe that only tacky suburban moms still enjoy candles (the video really is hilarious), we stand firm that a carefully selected candle can still be a great holiday present. Of course, you shouldn’t be running into your nearest dollar store to pick out the most overwhelmingly vanilla-scented option (subtlety is key in luxury fragrance)—instead, there are dozens of chic options that are also completely meant for Instagram (you’re giving the gift of content!). Rather than comb the internet for the best of the bunch, we found nine of the most luxurious candles on the market that are perfect for the holidays. Happy shopping!

P.F. Candle Co. Terra in Olive, $42

Aside from the heavenly scents in P.F. Candle Co.’s new plant-inspired line (we recommend Olive), each one can be used as a planter once it’s burned all the way through. Environmentally friendly and chic all in one.

Malin + Goetz in Cannabis, $54

For those on your list who appreciate a little whimsy, this Cannabis scent from the famed apothecary is both earthy and seductive. It’s also a fantastic conversation starter.

Commodity in Oolong, $55

There’s nothing more soothing than a hot cup of tea, so obviously a candle that embodies that perfectly is a must-have gift. This divine Oolong scent is also infused with honey, basil, and tobacco.

Overose in Nudesse, $66

This French brand is making waves in the scent world for its candles that are essentially Instagram gold. The rosy Nudesse scent is tinted with refreshing rain, all in gorgeous holographic packaging.

goop in Edition 03, $72

We couldn’t have a chic candle roundup without including the lifestyle queen herself, Gwyneth Paltrow. The third release is both woody and spicy, reminiscent of a cozy bonfire in the woods.

Pour L’Air in Studio Scents, $77

With a former fashion industry veteran at the helm of a candle company, you know each scent is going to be undeniably luxurious. The sandalwood, ink, and notes of books are meant to inspire curiosity.

Byredo in Rose Water, $80

While founder Ben Gorham is known for his delicious fragrances, we’re growing partial to his impossibly chic candles. Rose is a classic and a sure bet for even the most discerning noses.

Cander in Rose, $85

Maybe we’re biased, but you can’t deny that the French know how to make a damn good candle. Who doesn’t like a millennial pink version, or five, lined up on their bookcase?

& Other Stories in Juste Mythique, $25

When in doubt, a vanilla-based candle will always score major points at any holiday gathering. We’re loving Swedish brand & Other Stories’ blend with warm papyrus and tobacco in a chic black holder.
