We know the markings of a good closet when the person whose wardrobe we’re about to start pulling pieces from describes their style as “gothic Cirque du Soleil clown.” Yup. And founder and EIC of Fashion Unfiltered Katharine Zarrella’s apartment is an elevated reflection of just that. Think high-gloss black walls and floor-to-ceiling shiny white shelves that double as a hidden entrance to Zarrella’s bedroom. Those shelves are stacked with vintage CHANEL quilted bags, Alaïa pony-hair heels, and patent Prada pairs. Console tables topped with glass terrariums filled with delicate and intricate custom hats by the likes of Piers Atkinson and Phillip Treacy. And that was just the living room.
Zarrella’s love of fashion long precedes her current role, with past gigs at W magazine, Style.com, and working with seasoned designers like Zac Posen. Her appreciation for the theatricality and playfulness of clothing that fills her closet—a cache of Comme des Garçons big enough to make up its own exhibit, Junya Watanabe pieces you never thought someone could wear IRL (but she does, and does it well), head-to-toe CHANEL outfits, and piles of Louis Vuitton monogrammed luggage she stuffs with all the above—is a product of watching her mother dress up throughout her life.
So as she played dress-up for us—with her rabbit, Monsieur Francois Frou Frou—we talked about the significance of the items that take up real estate in her wardrobe, what it’s like starting a fashion pub of her own, and that time she almost lost Zac Posen’s dog, Tina Turner.
