First thing, if you haven’t read this yet, do it. Right now. This is a non-negotiable; read it.

After noticing how brilliant she is, how thoughtful and fantastic—you might have noticed the silver tips on her eyebrows, or her gorgeous hair. Because we’re never ones to deny you, we had to get the full lowdown from the hair and makeup team on how they got the look.

Jessica P. Smalls, who happens to also be Janelle Monáe’s makeup artist of choice, is behind the look. “I want her skin to look youthful, glowy, dewy, and have a really radiant sheen to it. Her skin is beautiful,” she said.

“I kept the colors to really rich earth tones—washes of oranges, pinks, and apricots to make her undertones of yellow glow. For the eyebrow, I wanted to do something that was subtle, yet pops, and there is no better way to do that than to use silver glitter liner!”

To get the look, Smalls used an angled brush and the Make Up For Ever Flash Palette’s silver color. “I filled in her brow, making it as sharp as possible. Then, using the angled brush and the silver, I traced from about the middle out to the outside point of her brows to give them that triangular shape.”

Next, Smalls painted a sheer wash of color on Davis’ cheeks. “I used Glossier’s Cloud Paint in Haze. I gave her three dots along her cheeks in almost a crescent shape and used my fingers and pretty much tap-danced my fingers on her cheeks just to wash it in.”

And what about her hair? “I used a spray bottle with water and sprayed her hair to wet it down a little bit. Then I sprayed in Dark and Lovely Au Naturale Moisture L.O.C. Super Quench Leave-In Spray throughout, just a little bit. I massaged that in to reinvigorate her natural curls,” says stylist Paul Warren.

After that, Warren went in with Dark and Lovely Au Naturale Anti-Shrinkage Twice as Nice Curl Refresher Spray and massaged that in, along with some Dark and Lovely Au Naturale Anti-Shrinkage Easy Twist Gel and Butter Crème. “That gave her hair some texture so it wouldn’t be too flat or solid. It would give it more dimension, but I didn’t twist and lock it or anything. I let all of that sit and air-dry while she got her makeup finished, and once that was done, I placed it with my fingers, touched it, and finished it with my fingers. At the end I used the Crème of Nature Argan Oil Perfect Edges Hair Gel to get around her hairline and clean that up, so it wasn’t fuzzy or flyaway.”
