This spring, we’re marrying a few (hint: four) of our favorite trends with the style archetypes that just won’t quit. Here are the girls we’re taking cues from while we get dressed this season, where they’ll be wearing it, and how you can pull it off, too.
We’ve always been unabashed maximalists when it comes to mixing and matching (and sometimes clashing) prints. This season, though, something about the trend (is it still really a trend, though?) feels different. The patterns feel every bit as present, only slightly restrained—even more austere, if anything—and fittingly make way for maximalist jewelry and footwear (from athletic sneakers to ’70s-tinged heels) to shine. It’s just the thing we envision all of the cool female artists and gallerists we follow on Instagram wearing—here’s how we think they’d pull it off.
The girl: The Arty Type
Think...Carlotta Kohl, Lucy Chadwick
She never leaves the house without: The animated keychain she picked up in Tokyo.
The beauty product she swears by: Rosewater facial spray, over generous pumps of facial oil.
Her slightly under-the-radar getaway of choice: Tulum.
Especially when it comes in the form of dramatic ball skirts or voluminous trousers. Don’t be afraid to stray away from streamline, even when pairing opposing prints, like the stripes-and-floral combo seen here. Pops of color tie the whole thing together (see the coordinating magenta embroidery on the shirt and shoes, plus that lip stain?).

Pairing something that is slightly on the admittedly trendy side (see this sneaker-and-slip-dress combination, straight-up nabbed from every Jenner/Hadid) with a slightly offbeat print (this pale checkered motif) adds interest to what might otherwise have you feel like a mannequin.

The genius thing about this Theory dress is that it’s one of those pieces that—as cliché as it now sounds—you can truly take from day to night. It’s a miracle. Worn with sneakers, like it is here, it totally works for a hungover brunch date, but takes on a whole new life when worn with strappy sandals.

Occasionally, mixing prints can feel a little...Miss Frizzle. She’s undeniably one of the sartorial greats, but sometimes you really want to throw gender performativity to the wind and lean into something that feels over-the-top femme. A gingham print might not traditionally have you on your Shania, but we dare you to tell us this Zimmerman dress isn’t the flirtiest thing you’ve ever seen.
