Nina Dobrev Cut an Extra 3 Inches Off Her Hair Right Before the Oscars

It’s all credit to her hairstylist Riawna Capri.

Kygo, Dior, and the Vanity Fair Oscar party (aka where anyone and everyone will be gathering)!

What did your night look like? Because for Nina Dobrev, it included all the above. But if you think the nerves of knowing that a hundred lenses will turn on you during Hollywood’s biggest night would make Dobrev play it safe, just ask her hairstylist and long-time friend Riawna Capri, who chopped an extra three inches off Dobrev’s just-shortened bob right before she walked out the door. You could say the couture had something to do with it.

“Before I started on Nina’s hair, she got her nails done, and then put on a La Mer Hydrating Facial Mask—she’s obsessed and preps for every red carpet event with one of these.”

“Last night was Nina’s first time wearing Dior, and when I saw the dress/choker combination her stylist, Ilaria Urbinati, had selected, I knew we had to do something special to really enhance the overall look. That’s when we discussed cutting her hair shorter to really bring the full look to life.”

“We got Nina ready for the Vanity Fair party at my salon, Nine Zero One (co-owned with Nikki Lee). She prefers to get ready there because the lighting is really great, and it’s easy since we can make the salon a disaster instead of her home.”

“I dry-cut Nina’s hair and ended up cutting off close to three inches to show off her neck in between the shoulder and the hair—I think that gap makes everything look so elegant.”

“After I finished cutting, I washed Nina’s hair with a volumizing shampoo/conditioner duo (MarulaOil Light Rare Oil Volumizing Shampoo & Conditioner) to enhance the hair texture, and before rough-drying I applied a heat protectant (the MarulaOil Light Rare Oil Dry mist). It’s great for preventing breakage and doesn’t weigh hair down!”

“I set up a little tequila and soda to get ready with.”

“We had the music blasting the whole night, and our playlist started off with Banks, and when that got too slow we moved on to hip-hop, and finally landed on the Kygo station.”

“Spencer Barnes did Nina’s makeup last night—he and I have worked together for close to 11 years, and share a lot of clients, so he and I have established a rhythm and this always helps to make the overall vibe really fun.”

“Nina and I have been friends for nine years now, so getting ready feels less like work and more like hanging out with your best friend.”

“I wanted to avoid an overly polished look, so I only used a brush to style her hairline and the crown, and then curled hair in three sections to enhance the volume and add some edge to the look. I set everything into place with MarulaOil Rare Oil Perfecting Hairspray, a flexible-hold hairspray.”
