How to Turn Wimbledon into a Shopping Opportunity

Wimbledon starts tomorrow! Did you guys know? No? Yes? Whether you’re a diehard Serena fan, betting on Novak Djokovic, or don’t care beyond having a chilled Pimm’s Cup on hand, let’s all agree that tennis is great when it comes to combining beautiful, athletic bodies and (as far as athletic wear goes) very chic outfits. Beyond their crazy talent, the outfits are the reason why we’ve always fangirled over the Williams sisters, Steffi Graf and Anna Kournikova, among many others. In the spirit of what might be the most fashion-friendly sport ever, we’re decking out our tennis game. Here’s how to look the part, whether you’re on or off the court.

On The Court

For the most part, we’re pretty tied to the classic tennis whites look—it’s a classic for a reason, people. That said, designers like Michi, who makes a tennis skirt complete with sheer paneled shorts underneath (v. hot), and ADay (a perforated t-shirt), make the whole all-white thing a little less square country club and a little more Serena Seal of Approval. Then again, wearing Nike’s black onesie is the tennis' equivalent of playing the rebel sister, which, TBH, we’re totally down for.

In The Stands

The fashion going on in the stands is just as important—if not more—than what's happening on the court. Just try to avoid the celebrity “style reports” that will proliferate starting tomorrow. (Fingers crossed that Drake is still into cheering for Serena.) Since you’re not allowed to make noise during game play, we advise making a sartorial statement instead. One way is by dressing like the players, but with a Givenchy label. The other is in something printastic—like Mary Katrantzou. Another option? Play off the sport’s preppy tradition with silk Bermuda shorts. As far as footwear goes, there are two choices and two choices only: Adidas Stan Smiths (the OG tennis-fashion collaboration) or all out stilettos. And whatever you do, please wear a hat: that’s a lot of direct sunlight for a girl.
