What It Takes To Be A Celebrity Stylist

Hint: it includes a pet bunny.

What It Takes To Be A Celebrity Stylist

Even if you’re not familiar with stylist Sarah Slutsky (though with her substantial social following, we find that unlikely), you’ve definitely seen her work. With clients like Elizabeth Olsen, Sophie Okonedo, and Emma Watson (no big deal), Sarah is behind every other red carpet look we pin. Case in point: right this way.

But beyond styling celebs for major events, Slutsky also runs a media brand, Cinematique, and has a pet bunny. What does your day look like when Emma Watson, growing your business and feeding your rabbit are all at play? Well, Slutsky was kind enough to document a typical week in her life (girlfriend is busy) and everything that goes along with being a celebrity stylist for clients heading to the CFDA’s, the Veuve Clicquot Polo Match, the Tony’s, and—as if that wasn’t enough—working on a mysterious new project.

Tuesday, May 31

I woke up before 7 AM, checked my email, Instagram and some other apps. At around 7:15 I decided to go for a quick run to get my day started. While running, I listened to the new Børns, which I cannot stop playing! I picked up some fresh fruit on my way home, and mixed it with coconut yogurt—my bunny Florence got all the scraps. My assistant Holly came over and we set up a brand new styling room in my apartment. I officially started the work day checking out confirmations for upcoming events. Then I reviewed lookbooks and coordinated showroom pulls, as well as working on pulling handbags and hats for the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic. Then I prepped for a meeting with some upcoming new partners—can't tell you too much yet.

For lunch, I went to check out a new Thai restaurant in my neighborhood, Crown Heights, called Look Thai Home Cooking. They had the cutest outdoor area—I sat at a picnic table in the garden and felt like I was in Thailand again. After lunch I prepped for a phone call. Later in the afternoon my friend, Jacob Rozenberg, came over to help me with some hair treatments to help recover from the Memorial Day weekend beach and sun. While I was getting my hair done, I caught up on the garmets and accessories we had coming in for the week’s fittings, so Holly and I ended up hitting Vogue.com hard for some new requests and chatted about where we should go to dinner. We ended up trying a great new Mexican restaurant in my neighborhood with my best friend, Greer, called El Atoradero.

Wednesday, June 1

I woke up this morning and made myself a fruit bowl from goods I purchased at the farmers market. I answered some emails and worked on requests for the polo match. Today was a Wednesday, and that means a #30wears Levi’s jeans day—I’m taking a personal challenge to re-wear my most recent purchase 30 times. So I hit the closet to prep look 24. Today was hot, so it was interesting styling long jeans for the weather. I hit the road and stopped by my favorite coffee shop, Little Zelda, and headed to my Wes Gordon resort appointment. I had a great time catching up with some of my favorite people from his PR agency.

After Wes Gordon, I had a lunch with the co-founder of Behno. We talked about an upcoming project we are working on together to raise awareness around his factory in India as well as another potential collab. From there, I scurried to Brooklyn Heights to the Madewell and JM Drygoods lunch. The embroidered pieces were incredible—they seemed to be made with lots of love. It was also great to catch up with my good friend Elle who knows all the secret spots and puts together the best events! Then I zipped back to Manhattan to work on a few options for a client heading to the Tony awards. After touching base with a few other clients and doing a few last minute accessory selections in an Uber, I met up with my girlfriends to send off our friend Kari to Myanmar! I arrived home at 10 PM to feed Florence the bunny rabbit. At home, I evaluated the new set-up in my fitting room, sent some final emails and climbed into bed to read, My Life on the Road, Gloria Steinem's biography.

Thursday, June 2

In the morning, Holly and I treated ourselves to Nagle bagels and Little Zelda coffee. We sat outside and answered some emails over our coffees. We couldn't stick around too long because we had to prep for Veuve Clicquot polo match, and CFDA Awards fittings. Back at the apartment, I cut up some fresh watermelon to have on hand during the fitting, and made a quick fitting playlist including Børns, LANY, The Kills, Chvrches, Beach House and Lucius. It turned out to be a great fitting, and I’m super excited about the final looks for both events. Afterwards, I caught up on some quick emails before making a Greek salad and running down to Excelsior Bike Shop to grab my bike from a tune up. I rode back (feeling like summer), and worked on my super secret project. Later in the evening, I received confirmation on a new client with an event the following week, so I flipped to Vogue.com to start making requests for the event.

Monday, June 6

Monday! I woke up feeling pretty refreshed after a nice weekend away upstate, and headed straight into the city early for a Tony's fitting. It was great, yay! I was super excited about the look coming together—it was a magic moment. Directly from the fitting, I caught up with an old colleague over coffee before hitting the resort circuit of appointments. First, I stopped by Rosie Assoulin—I’m always blown away by her use of shape and proportion. From there, I stopped by Rosetta Getty—I’m loving her use of color and knits. Next, I can always count on Preen for their amazing use of floral prints and modern ruffles. Finally, I stopped into Stella McCartney—where I had a good laugh with friends from back when I was an intern. I called it a day, and skedaddled to the 4 train to meet a friend and head up to Yankee stadium to catch a night game. (Yankees won!)

Tuesday, June 7

On Tuesday I headed straight to some more resort appointments. I saw Michael Kors (I love the energy when Michael speaks to his collection—truly one of the reasons I'm in love with fashion), Delpozo (stunning color, shape, and pretty pretty embroidery), and Brock Collection (one of my absolute favorite new designers). After, I met up with my new team to lay foundation and framework for colors, font, graphics etc. for, shall we say, Project X? Then, I grabbed some clothes for a fitting tomorrow with my new client, and headed back to Brooklyn for some last minute requests before going to the Public School resort show. To wrap up the day at home, my good friend come over with wine and cheese, and I brought out the watermelon (because summer) and we hung out. He was kind enough to sit with me while I updated my portfolio.

Wednesday, June 8

I’m going on vacation tomorrow! I woke up ahead of my alarm at 5:30 because I knew I had a busy day ahead. Holly made some scrambled eggs with goat cheese, and I prepped for my afternoon fitting before a fun photo shoot. A thunderstorm came mid day, I felt terrible when the photographer arrived soaking wet, but he was a champion [ed note: thank you Erik!]. We were confined to my apartment for the shoot, but I was secretly happy because while I've only lived in this apartment a short while, it's a labor of love and I really enjoy spending time here. After wrapping up the shoot, I went straight into the fitting for The Ailey Spirit Gala with a terrific client. From there I rushed to pack my bags (nod to Away for finally providing me with a charger and chic carry-on solution). I ran straight out the door to the airport for a long weekend with my best friends on Kiawah Island!
