Sometimes following a shoot, we leave feeling as though we had not only just met someone who shares our love for Tom Ford and Charlotte Olympia, but also speaks our language when it came to being influenced by the likes of the Spice Girls, TLC and Whitney Houston (musically, emotionally, and style-wise). Jhené Aiko’s shoot was one of those times.

In fact, when we arrived at Aiko’s LA home, it was instantly clear we had a lot in common. The woman was blaring Brandy and Monica’s “The Boy is Mine” (!) as she put on one last swipe of lipstick before giving us a tour of her Balenciaga, Acne Studios, and Alaïa-packed wardrobe. There were so many floor-length sheer gowns—from antique-white limited edition Free People to embroidered For Love & Lemons pieces—we couldn’t find enough surface area to hang them. Then there were the Tevas—which took us waaayyy back—which were from a collaboration between Aiko and the brand.

But the throwbacks didn’t end there; Aiko gushed over meeting John Mayer in the studio (we hope this means what we think it means!), how Sketchers platforms were a godsend from the Spice Girls for the petite, and how Two of a Kind-era Mary-Kate and Ashley pretty much dictated everything she wore from elementary through high school. Same!
