5 Fashion Buyers on the Best Swimwear of the Summer

Anyone else feeling the urge—now that it actually feels like summer—to find a new swimsuit? Anyone else feel like it’s close to impossible to choose among the million-and-one options? Not that we ever choose just one (or two, if we’re being honest), but still, being presented with a “swim” page featuring 250+ options on your favorite e-comm site feels like a bit of a trick. Which is exactly why we asked the buyers in charge of finding and stocking these suits for a little insight into exactly what we should be wearing this season: their top three suits—that’s it, that’s all. And from what we can gather, a one-piece is where we should be throwing our money this season.

Candice Fragis

Buying and Merchandising Director, Farfetch.com

“At the moment I'm really into swimwear that can cross over into ready to wear—a more functional bodysuit that’s sexy but still discrete, like the Rick Owens nude one-piece. I also love the idea of working a real look solely with swimwear, which Lisa Marie Fernandez does so well. An essential in my selection is always a stringy triangle bikini—it guarantees the best tan!”

Olivia Kim

VP of Creative Projects, Nordstrom

“I’ve always been a one-piecer, ever since I was a kid (which probably stems from swim team) so I’m super excited it’s finally made a comeback. They’re versatile, which I love—throw jeans on over one and it serves as a bodysuit. The Kiini is my favorite right now. I love the rainbow crochet trim. The color is the perfect pop, which looks so good under something sheer if you’re inclined to [go that route]!”

Mimi Fukuyoshi

VP/Divisional Merchandising Manager, 5F Contemporary, Bergdorf Goodman

“Maillots are making a big comeback, and they're definitely not your grandmother's one-piece. This one from Marysia adds a tasteful cut-out for a sexy look that isn't overly so. In a universally flattering shade of red and with the on-trend scallop details, this one is a winner. You can never go wrong with a classic black string bikini. This one from Same Swim (exclusive to Bergdorf Goodman in NY) is updated with white embroidery to keep it looking fresh. For those who want to wear a bikini but with a little more coverage, the higher neckline top is a perfect fit. This one from Mikoh in a blue and white nautical stripe is in keeping with the preppy, sporty vibe.”

Natalie Kingham

Buying Director, MatchesFashion.com

“One-pieces are becoming more popular as they offer a sleek, sexy look to suit all body shapes and can give structure and confidence. They also work well for women who are more athletic, or like to swim rather than just sunbathe. I love the swimsuits from Solid and Striped—their strategic design is flattering on all shapes as it gives an illusion of being slimmer. We have also seen a trend for cut-out swimsuits over the past couple of seasons, with Zimmermann’s novel take on the classic one-piece incorporating the subtle cut-out design on the front for a contemporary edge and flattering colour-blocking that alludes to an hourglass shape. Alternatively, turn to Thapelo Paris for an effortless seductive one-piece. The sleek silhouette highlights just the right amount of skin with a sultry lace-up on the sides.”

Maria Williams

Senior Buyer, Net-a-Porter.com

“I am a big fan of the off-the-shoulder trend this season and am all about taking your swimsuit from day to night by embracing it as a bodysuit or cropped top. Marysia’s Palm Springs scalloped swimsuit has a classic feel that is flattering for the beach and poolside, but can also be worn with a flowing maxi skirt or palazzo pants in the evening. Lisa Marie Fernandez’s Leandra bikini, a favorite of its namesake, Leandra Medine, is the perfect way to wear the off-the-shoulder trend at the beach this summer. Zimmermann is also one of my top brands for the warmer months. The brand’s floral prints and delicate fabrics are sure to stand out and serve as multitasking pieces; the Pavilion crocheted cotton and floral-print bikini is one of my favorites from the collection. The contrasting print and crocheted texture is a brand signature.”
