Sara Battaglia's Ferragamo Collection Has Arrived

What do you get when you combine an iconic Italian label, two extremely fashionable Italian sisters and a rainy New York day? Well, in this case you get stylist and street style phenom Giovanna Battaglia (let’s be honest, the woman consistently owns everyone when it comes to getting Phil Oh’s shot) and her sister Sara, a bag designer who just happens to have designed a capsule collection for Salvatore Ferragamo, playing dress up at Giovanna’s Chelsea home. Of course, the collection itself is inspired by lo splendore della vita—the splendor of life—which is just about the most Italian thing we’ve ever heard of (other than maybe la dolce vita) and essentially encapsulates both the sisters (who claim fashion to be part of their DNA). It was just rainy New York that needed to catch up. Nevertheless, we had a lightning round with the sisters and here’s what we’ve concluded as to the makeup of Italian style: don’t be afraid of color (see the recurring rainbow theme); family and history are worthy inspiration; and getting a little crazy on the dance floor is totally acceptable.

How they describe one another's style:

Sara: "The thing I love about Giovanna is that she always looks very sophisticated and cool no matter what she is wearing, and very natural at the same time."

Giovanna: "Sara is eccentric; she's so good at mixing colors together. She's shy and also a very creative person. I like her style; it’s cool and feminine, but she loves to be masculine sometimes, especially when she's working."

Sara: "Gio was always so forward. When we were younger, we were already making special looks. We were different; we changed as fashion kept changing every season, but we kept our personalities, which is very important."

On their first fashion memories:

Sara: "Since we were girls we used to organize fashion shows for our family, creating looks with special effects, too."

On collaborating with Ferragamo:

Sara: "I met James Ferragamo at an informal occasion and during one of our conversations the brand asked me if I was interested in doing a collection with them! I didn’t even need to think about it. Of course I said YES! It’s such a great honour for me to work with Salvatore Ferragamo."

On what inspired the collection:

Sara: "The rainbow wedge is the iconic Salvatore Ferragamo creation that inspired me. I was free to invent and play with materials and colours, reinventing the codes of the brand DNA, keeping the distinctive elements that made the rainbow an example of beauty and modernity that still lives today."

Sara's favorite piece from the collection:

Sara: "All of them! But I'm in love with the mini bucket bag and the evening clutch."

If your sister was an emoji, which would she be?

Sara: "Gio is the one with the sunglasses."

What most people don't know about Sara:

Giovanna: "People don't know that Sara is very obsessed with old movies. I think she loves how the women were so feminine and elegant."

One thing they'd never be caught wearing:

Sara: "Everything is possible! Never say never!"

The one trend they can't stand:

Sara: "We would like to move from the stereotype of the dramatic, sad woman striking a fake pose wearing clothes just to cover herself. I think that the woman needs to be chic, cool and feminine, but with a contemporary and independent strong energy."

What you need to do to work in fashion:

Sara: "Be persistent, professional and work hard."
