How To Wear Glitter In Your Hair

…And not look like a ‘90s rave princess.

How To Wear Glitter In Your Hair

Since our middle school days of hair mascara and NYC eye shadow, we’ve largely stayed far, far away from anything glittery or sparkly in the beauty department (save for a victory lap or two with Deborah Lippmann’s Happy Birthday polish in college). But we recently started reconsidering: first with Charlotte Tilbury’s Supermodel Glow and other similarly “light refracting” body products, and then, during an Instagram deep dive on some errant stream, we found colorist Daniel Moon’s Major Moonshine. And it wasn’t teeny little golden bits of shimmer, either. It was, ahem, major: full on, multicolor, hair-coating glitter paste. And we fell in love.

So it didn’t take us long to call up Daniel Moon himself so we could see for ourselves exactly how this whole glitter revolution (too much?) was going down. Bringing swimsuit designer and model Sahara Ray—maybe you’re one of her 703K Instagram followers (and counting)?—along for the chaos, we set ourselves up for Moon’s color-wonderful ways at Andy Lecompte Salon. It wasn’t long before he was painting Ray’s long blond locks with Major Moonshine, while we chatted to Moon about how he came up with the product and a particular “psychedelic princess” who uses it regularly (he was pretty psychedelic himself). Let’s just say we left with a few pots of our own—we’re overhauling our belayage with fuchsia glitter as we write.

ON CREATING MAJOR MOONSHINE:

“I set out to see the world not through a black and white lens nor biased eyes. I based this on my belief in a color revolution; a revolution against traditional hair color and styles that do not reflect who that person really is. It was a natural evolution from temporary hair color with an added reflection of light.”

ON HIS FAVORITE MAJOR MOONSHINE MILEY MOMENT:

“Major Moonshine has made its mark in Los Angeles and has been exciting since day one. More recently it was used by expert hairstylist Andy Lecompte on psychedelic princess Miley Cyrus for the 6th Annual AMFAR Inspiration Gala. It is magical.”

ON HOW TO MAJOR MOONSHINE FOR THE FIRST TIME:

“Less is more. Major Moonshine is a stylish product. Start light, with a small amount of product on your hairline. Enjoy the compliments and go from there. Learn how the product can fit in your style—it will. When it comes to colors, start with what you know: gold, silver, pink. If you want the lay-low-and-wait-to-be-noticed vibe, if you are blonde, stick to light colors, if you are brunette, go with darker colors. I learned a lot from my time experimenting in my studio. I highly suggest it: test drive.”

ON HOW TO BLEND:

“Major Moonshine is easy to blend. You can overlap colors when they are wet or you can hit the hair with a blowdryer after the first application and reapply with the second color.”

AND IF YOU REALLY WANT TO REMOVE IT:

“Major Moonshine is easily rinsed out with water. It is gel based, so it doesn't put up a fight. Sleeping with it isn't advised, but is okay if you are okay waking up with a face full of glitter.”
