Kym Ellery

Designer; Founder, Ellery. Sydney

The fact that we started and ended our first-ever jaunt through Sydney with designer Kym Ellery—our first day was spent taking in her show at fashion week and getting in one too many jet-lagged cocktails at her namesake after party, and this very shoot you're scrolling through was one of our last of the week—is all too fitting. We've been watching the designer and her line of minimal, modern, way-too-effing-cool-girl clothes for what seems like forever, and it all felt very full circle to have her bookending our time down under. That, and her collection of Proenza Schouler, Céline and Ghesquière-era Louis Vuitton was just the thing to help us fight off the 14-hour time difference sans caffeine. We rolled over to Ellery's Palm Beach home in the late afternoon, just as the sun was starting to set. Ellery welcomed us inside in one of her signature ensembles: a thigh-length black sweater topping off a pair of black flares of her own design. And, after sifting through her closet in full, we like to think we have Ellery's personal style figured out. Much like the designs that bear her name, it's all about those clean lines, futuristic fabrics and lanky, elongated silhouettes, finished off with make-you-look-twice accessories (think: trompe l'oeil heels, surrealist Bernard Delettrez cuffs, a boss-bitch Balenciaga bag). Oh, and gold. Lots of gold. And while we wrapped our shoot with Ellery with a round of adult beverages, she shared some predictably sage advice on building her brand, and her best advice for those getting their start in this here industry. Drumroll, please. “Always be honest and do the right thing. Karma is real, my friends. Spend as much time as you can with people who are older and wiser than you are. It's important to always be learning from others.” Pretty sure that while in Kym's company, we just did that.
