We're suckers for anyone who sticks to a signature. It's something that takes real conviction—the undying belief that if you think leaving the house in, say, jumbo-sized overalls and a bucket hat is a look, then it is—the sort of attitude that separates actual style icons from everyone else. A style signature truly earns its distinction, though, when it becomes impossible to think of someone without that immediate identifier—it becomes a part of their being, you know? And given that the first thing anyone thinks of when we talk about stylist Martha Ward are "cross-body bag" "skirt" or "pink", we think it's safe to say she's nailed hers by now. The only way to describe Ward is as the quintessential English rose post-stroll through Portobello Market and the development of a serious dedication to knick knacks ("Iris Apfel loves clutter and she believes that not having knick-knacks shows a lack of history and soul. I’m rolling with that to justify my hoarding," she explained). Her speech is peppered with the kind of Briticisms that anyone born outside of the UK couldn't get away with saying; the idea of vegan-gluten-free-macrobiotic recipes 'free from' anything prompts expletives ("a chocolate mousse, free from chocolate, are you CRAZY?!"). So how'd she end up as one of her city's most preeminent stylists? As it turns out, an early gig with Tatler under (a pre Net-a-Porter) Natalie Massenet launched a career that now includes time at Vanity Fair, Harper's Bazaar, the Sunday Times and Vogue.com, where, as the face of VogueTV, she's shared the screen with everyone from Karl Lagerfeld and Kate Moss to Harry Styles, Tom Ford and Valentino. And for the first-ever time in Coveteur history, we wrapped our shoot not only with not a round of celebratory drinks (that's nothing new), but also by heading off to the movie theatre (sorry—cinema) to take in a screening of Cinderella. Fitting, right?
