Get It Or Regret It

Sometimes it’s just something. You know what we mean: when, no matter how long it’s been or how much (retail) therapy you’ve been through, you just can’t get it out of your head (with apologies to Kylie Minogue). In case you haven’t clued in yet, we’re talking about shopping here, people, and that heart-tearing, desperate epiphany when you realize you absolutely must have something—a CHANEL bag, you’re Eva Chen; any bag, if you’re Tina Craig—and will not rest until it’s yours. Or when the thrill of the hunt deteriorates into a panic-stricken chase.

And then there’s those who just stumble across that perfect piece that they’ll never be able to part with. Like Leandra Medine, who, when we pulled a particularly eye-catching J.Mendel gown out of her closet, couldn’t help but exclaim that she was the owner of the one and only sample that had previously been worn of Blake Lively on the set of Gossip Girl. How’s that for hand-me-downs? Or Kelly Oxford’s accidental steal of a Marni dress, which she saved to debut on the perfect occasion. See, guys, we’re not the only one with serious emotional feelings towards inanimate objects. Think of it as the fashion version of finding Mr. Right.

Eva Chen"Years ago, there was classic quilted Chanel 2.55 bag in the most beautiful shade of lilac imaginable—one that teetered on the edge of pale rosebud pink and lavender. I paused to think about the bag for a night… and it was gone by the next morning. They checked every Chanel store in the Western Hemisphere for that bag, with no luck. One day, that bag will be mine!"

"I found [this orange embroidered Marni] dress on THE OUTNET.COM, just as they listed the new items. It was marked down 70 or 75% from over $3000, but they accidentally marked it as $120 instead of $1200! I snapped it up, sat back and realized that I had probably spent the last 2 years online shopping just for that moment. I saved it for a year, for a big moment. I wore it on Jimmy Kimmel Live when I was promoting my book. Jimmy is one of the greatest people I know and totally deserved to share the stage with that dress."

Tina Craig"No bag has ever gotten away from me. When I want a bag, I will hunt it down until I find it, even if it takes years. I will stay up all night calling stores in different countries to locate a bag I want.”

Sasha Charni Morrison"The hot pink Céline. I saw it on Bag Snob and lost my shit. I needed it immediately. It was Resort 2012. I already had an orange, but I needed the hot pink. I was on every list: Barneys, Bergdorf’s. I did some crime by asking a friend to bump me up and get it for me—that didn’t work. I called the press office; I asked various editors; I had my shoe guy on the case; someone in L.A. at Maxfield. And none who could be had! They only ordered a small number but had a hundred and eighty people on the list for thirty bags. The Céline store in Miami was barren and N.Y. hadn’t quite opened. I was out of my mind—and “no” is never an option or an answer! Finally, a random tweeter known as “The Closet Squad” read my ridiculous tweets about this bag and told me Kirna had it. I called and they didn’t. Closet Squad apologized profusely—why she cared in the first place floored me!—and said to give her two hours. Was this a sting? A counterfeit deal? Why did she care? Then a tweet came to call Mary Sue. Sometimes you’re so insane and desperate you don’t do background checks. I called. Scared. Hung up. Like a teenager. Then called back asking for her and where she was located. And then she told me North Carolina, and she knew who I was (caller ID?). It was a store called Capitol and they sell everything: McQueen, Alaïa, Balenciaga, Givenchy, Mary Katrantzou, Oscar de la Renta, The Row, Valentino and Céline. And they had one bag in that color. And it was all mine! It turns out that @TheClosetSquad has hopeless, pathetic clients like myself who need the fix. And she, Jill, helps you out."

"I obsessed over these [Prada studded Perspex] shoes. I ordered them early in Italy, stalked headquarters in Milan and had them shipped to New York. Every time I wear them I end up dancing, which is unfortunate for my husband’s toes. They are heavy, but they are my favorite, and he is fine with nine toes."

Shea Marie"I saw these on sale for a really good deal, and there was only one size left, which was a size too big. I was in NYC and my plan was to stuff toilet paper in the toe and wear them to the event I was going to. I got about five steps out the hotel door before things took a turn for the worse: me on the ground and toilet paper tumbling out. Needless to say it wasn’t one of my most graceful moments."

JESSICA MINKOFF"I will always be on the hunt for the perfect pair of distressed denim. I'd also love a colorful mixed material coat like the ones in Alexander Wang's fall collection for Balenciaga."

"One Christmas, I wanted [these Chloé boots] so badly and my husband bought them for me. I actually cried when I opened up the box! I'll never let them go—I know they’re going to make a comeback…some day!"

"I scored [this gown] at a sample sale for $600! It was slashed down from $5,000. There’s only one runway sample—it never went into production and happens to be the actual dress Serena wore on an episode of Gossip Girl. If you think this is good, you should see what my mama scored. I’m talking white fur cape."

"I can't begin to explain how much I love a collaboration and [the Rodarte x Target collab] was definitely one of my all-time favorites. I went to every single Target store in LA searching for this dress—one piece of the many (er, 12?) I eventually bought. And I have no regrets about doing so!"
