Getting CFDA Ready with Karlie Kloss

“Wait, this is your first time at the CFDA Awards?” model Karlie Kloss asked Michelle Ochs, who sat in the adjacent chair while getting her hair done, and in turn nodded with an enthusiastic “Yes!”

“Oh, then we are definitely bringing it home!”

The CFDA Awards are kind of like the Oscars of fashion; they’re, like, a really big deal. So you can imagine the excitement when design duo (and Cov-alum!) Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs found out they were nominated…for the first time.

“We were at our office and we got a phone call from Steven Kolb. And I was like, ‘Fuck! What have we done now?’ We weren’t even expecting it. I had forgotten the nominations were coming out. I thought he was kidding!” Cushnie told us. She immediately spilled the news to her partner-in-crime, and without hesitation they knew just the girl to bring as their date: Miss Kloss. And with that the planning began…and the nail biting stopped.

“I had a serious biting problem,” Ochs confessed. As for the nails, the girls had their resident manicure master pop by the studio; Ochs went all out with a dagger-sharp filed mani with Swarovski crystals on the inside (business in the front, party in the back kind of thing) and Cushnie went for all-red-everything. We mean, everything: dress, lips, shoes—they were Louboutin, duh—and bag.

“Once I decided I was wearing the red dress, I was like, ‘I want everything to be red,’” Cushnie said. We got a full preview of their Resort collection, before seeing the big reveal of each girl’s gown. For Michelle, it was a neon number with cut-outs—go big or go home, right?—and for Karlie it a was navy patented number with a dramatic elongated neckline.

“This one was definitely for Karlie,” Cushnie said as she pointed to the dress hanging on the rack. “And then Michelle and I decided from there.”

“I feel like the luckiest girl and I have two of the hottest dates,” Kloss told us. We chatted with her about past red carpet regrets,—it involved a post-runway hairdo and makeup—her style in high school, (think: her older sister’s over-sized clothes and her younger sister’s too-small hand-me-downs), her latest design endeavour for Frame, and her first designer purchase (a Longchamp she still has).

With a little help from their hair and make-up army —it takes a village—the Cushnie et Ochs girls were ready with the perfect good luck charm—ahem! Kloss—on their arm.
