We like to think our style is far from predictable, and yet each year around this same time, there’s reliably a solid handful of wardrobe essentials we find ourselves itching to invest in. Every. Single. Time!
Truthfully, our shopping list is made up of all the usual suspects: ankle boots, classic handbags, chandelier earrings, great jackets—the types of things we honestly first began fantasizing about back in July. That being said, we’d at least like to think each season’s take represents an entirely new attitude towards each: our go-to sock boot is swapped out for a pair of shiny patent platforms that wouldn’t be completely out of place in Iggy Pop’s closet, for example. Our well-loved dad hat gets a significant upgrade in the form of a sleek felt Saint Laurent fedora. A classic little black bag changes it up with the help of a little stamped croc (the print arguably having the biggest moment of them all right now). After all, the French fashion house is undeniably the industry gatekeeper in setting the bar for what we’ll be hitting “add to cart” on each season. Season after season, they somehow strike the perfect balance between classic silhouettes and right-now design motifs—here are three of the sure-fire statement pieces we’re betting our credit card statements on.
It’s kind of incredible how a shock of high-gloss or a bold chain can completely change up an otherwise understated or classic handbag. Case in point: Saint Laurent’s classic monogram, done over this season in a slick black—made all glossy in patent leather. And the crocodile Niki that’s the perfect marriage of elegant silhouette and edgy hardware. The gorgeous chain strap gets us every time. Let’s not forget about the power of a black drawstring bag with, you guessed it, more chain, that takes you easily from day to night. Wear yours with everything and anything.
This season, we’re swapping out our go-to sock boot for a pair of these platforms that wouldn’t be completely out of place in Iggy Pop’s closet. Pair yours with a pair of skinny-fit jeans tucked in if you dare to wear them for day (!), or opt for an itty-bitty mini skirt (for the full effect) come nighttime. A perfectly worn-in, slouchy vintage tee completes the look either way.
Practicality? Never heard of it. Instead, we’re unwavering in our love of big, sparkling earrings. Seriously, there’s no better shortcut to an instant hit of cool than pairing your look with a pair. The key is styling them with something slightly less obvious: We love a billowing button-down and a pair of classic jeans, or a tailored blazer dress with a structural pump or equally glittering bootie on a night out.
