Fresh to Depth

in collaboration with fenty puma by rihanna

Anaa Saber of Our Second Skin shows us how to pull off summer’s biggest trend.

How to Channel Rihanna’s Motocross Style Anywhere—Even at the Beach. The whole thing started when Rih closed out her FENTY PUMA runway show on the back of a motorcycle. Then, came the ad campaign: Rihanna and all the baddest models (Slick, Selena, Yasmin) frolicking in the desert, clad in the coolest fluorescent moto looks. We knew then and there we had one mission—take a page out of the bad gal’s book and take the moto-inspired look to hit sand and surf.

As we’re admittedly new to this, we figured it was only right to enlist Anaa Saber of Our Second Skin—general athleisure queen and the proud owner of a mean array of vintage sunglasses (told you we knew just who to call). Here’s what we learned.

Coordinate with Color

Nothing makes a look feel more considered than subtly coordinating pops of color in all the right places—the key word here again being subtle (never matchy). While the espadrilles help make this look feel beach-ready, the standout colorway and suede finish make them ready for just about anything. As for the iridescent ’80s-style wraparound visor sunglasses? Pulled from Saber's collection, of course. Something about that cobalt blue shade picked up in Saber’s oversized hoodie and then again in the logo detail on her neon slides... it just works, doesn't it?

Ventilation is Key

We kid—kinda. It doesn’t exactly hurt that so many of the trend’s signatures that help real-life bikers cool off—zippers, mesh detailing—are exactly what make this look warm-weather-friendly, too. Saber suited up a red asymmetrical crop top with a sporty panelled pair of FENTY PUMA BY Rihanna leggings. With bold racing-inspired white zippers at the waist and hips, they go with literally anything and everything.

Ground your look

Even the wildest of looks will always have some element to bring it back down to earth. Our case in point: consider the humble espadrille. While it may not be the most obvious shoe for a badass moto-inspired look, Saber proved otherwise, pairing bike shorts and a terry cloth graphic hoodie with hers. To add a personal touch, she knotted the pull strings and had her assortment of delicate gold chains peek out over top, too.

Pair Opposites

Often the trick to pulling off something that feels out of your comfort zone is to take it, and pair it with something that feels like the total opposite. Case in point: how Saber instinctively topped a moto-sporty oversized tee with a racer-feel checkered corset—which she then paired with slouchy denim. The lingerie's lace-up detailing femmes things up, but the slouchy jeans and neon espadrilles keeps it feeling interesting, not obvious.

Play with proportions

A baggy, utilitarian vest and oversized (baggy, even) denim might not scream 'summer'—at least, at first. But pair it with something equal parts sporty and sexy—like a sports bra—and you have something that feels not just unexpected, but balances the proportions nicely, too. A minimal pair of black suede espadrilles is the one staple we couldn't imagine getting dressed without this summer—consider them your new 'wear everywhere' shoe.
