While the majority of air travel is out of the question this summer—for some, even road tripping feels daunting—staycations might be the ticket for those seeking a change of scenery and a satisfying dose of R&R. I mean, when it comes down to hotel robes, room service, a rooftop pool, or a beachfront property, what more do you really need? Luckily, Los Angeles crowds don’t have to travel far for a relaxing escape. With cool new boutique hotels on the rise and beachfront getaways within a short driving distance, we recommend booking a room at one of these five hotels for the ultimate staycation retreat.

In partnership with acclaimed interior designer Kelly Wearstler, Santa Monica Proper, which opened last summer as the Westside’s first destination hotel in over a decade, takes the brand’s reputation of laid-back luxury to unparalleled new heights. Using earthy, natural palettes, raw materials, and organic textiles, Wearstler worked with local artisans to effectively bring warmth and a local experience to the spaces. With 271 rooms (some with full palm trees), a rooftop pool deck with coastal views, and three restaurants at the property, you’ll likely want to extend your stay.

This spring, Proper Hotels opened its more affordable sister property, Hotel June. Much like Santa Monica Proper, it has a strong backbone in design, food and beverage, and community, but with a more relaxed energy. The hotel’s 250 modern, beach-vibe rooms provide comfort and convenience, between Aesop bath products, noise-canceling windows, Fili D’oro linens, and side tables that transition into remote working setups. On the property you’ll have access to the outdoor pool at the Caravan Swim Club, which features their sundeck with cabanas and a fire pit, as well as the hotel’s two on-site restaurants by Steve Livigni from Scopa.

A stay at Surfrider Hotel Malibu is as close as it can get to feeling like you’re in your own beach house. Open to guests only, the 20-room Californian beach house is a private escape. Here, you’ll enjoy meals on the roof deck with a sustainable and organic food and beverage program, a library and lounge, locally curated boutique, and hotel amenities like umbrellas, beach towels, and sunscreen. Custom surfboards and Mini Coops are available should you wish to take a drive down the Pacific Coast Highway. The best part? The airy, bohemian rooms with panoramic views of the Pacific.

Beloved boutique hotel brand Palisociety has breathed new life into Silver Lake hospitality. While highly residential and filled with some of the city’s best dining and nightlife options, Silver Lake was lacking in worthy hotel accommodations until now. With the help of design studio Electric Bowery, Silver Lake Pool & Inn is a charming California oasis with influences from Mexico City and Palm Springs. The rooms and shared spaces are light, comfortable and airy, and the rooftop pool and restaurant are the perfect place to spend some lazy California days.

London-based luxury hotel brand The Hoxton is a beaux-arts feast for the eyes in Downtown L.A. The 174 rooms, ranging from Snug, to Cosy, to Roomy, to Biggy, are a mix between tropical and modern elegance. From cane-webbed bed frames to palm-printed pillows and vintage radios, you’ll feel at home and at ease in these cleverly designed spaces. The hotel also features a rooftop pool and two restaurants and bars—one of which is helmed by the team behind Sunday in Brooklyn.
