5 Beauty Trends We Spotted Backstage at New York Fashion Week

Megawatt lashes and paintbrush eyeshadow for the win.

New York Fashion Week has come to a close, and while the sidewalks are finally clear of street-style stars, photographers, and models dashing to each location, several new beauty trends have begun to take root for the months ahead. Backstage at shows across Manhattan, makeup artists like Diane Kendall, Tom Pecheux, and Dick Page created runway looks that ranged from eco-conscious ’70s nomad to elegant transcontinental traveler. An embrace of each model’s natural beauty was prevalent for many designers, but there was also no shortage of wildly colorful makeup. Check out the top five beauty trends we saw at fashion week this season.

Watercolor Makeup

A colorful eyeshadow trend we’ve noticed all over Instagram lately, up-and-coming designers like Eckhaus Latta and Collina Strada both sent dreamy pastel shadows in abstract shapes down the runway. The more artistic the application, the better. Bonus points if you have an airbrush machine like makeup artist Isamaya Ffrench.

Paintbrush Eyeshadow

Eyes were definitely the focus this season, with makeup artists utilizing thicker, tackier products to apply a seemingly haphazard swipe of color across the lids. At Carolina Herrera, Romy Soleimani drew directly onto six models’ eyelids with a bright shade of Bobbi Brown Lip Color. At Proenza Schouler, Dick Page painted a dramatic swatch of Maybelline Tattoo Studio 24 Hour Cream Shadow in a charcoal black from the corner of the eye across the crease. It’s all about an imperfect, bold swipe of color, which means you don’t need to be too precious with your application.

Minimal Contour

No offense to the contour queens out there, but makeup artists were doing away with all sculpting this season. At Prabal Gurung, Proenza Schouler, and Marc Jacobs, there was nary a bronzer in sight—just a subtle warm blush on the apples of the cheeks to brighten up the face and keep each girl looking fresh.

Natural Lips

While there were a few pops of dark color on the runways, many designers decided to keep the lips pared back. Diane Kendall at Tom Ford even went so far as to bring down the natural lip shade with foundation, for a true nude neutral look. Others, like Tom Pecheux at Brandon Maxwell and Kendall again at Marc Jacobs and Prabal Gurung, used nothing more than a quick swipe of clear lip balm.

Lashes for Days

Spidery, dramatic eyelashes popped up at Brandon Maxwell—where Tom Pecheux used a liquid eyeliner to paint Twiggy-like bottom lashes on each girl, plus individual falsies up top—as well as Longchamp, courtesy of make maven Pat McGrath. The latter also conveniently released her own Pat McGrath Labs mascara today, proving this trend isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
