The 8 Best Lipstick Shades for Fall

From cranberry to burgundy and everything in between.

Fall is the season of renewal in fashion and beauty. It’s when you finally get to unbox all your statement coats and jackets, hunt for some new heeled booties, and generally revamp your look for the cooler months ahead. Personally, I love nothing more than hitting the reset button on my beauty routine, whether I’m getting my eyebrows freshly tinted and shaped (thanks, Kristie Streicher!) or adding a new makeup product to my rotation. With October’s arrival came a personal hunt for the best new lipsticks, because nothing remedies my fading summer tan better than a bold lip. A deep cranberry, warm brick, or moody burgundy shade will pair perfectly with my preferred warm, dewy makeup look and accent the camel cashmere coat I just bought (stylist Marina Ingvarsson’s suggestion) like a dream. Check out my eight favorite lipsticks for fall below.

Shiseido VisonAiry Gel Lipstick in Shizuka Red, $26

As much as I still love the matte lipstick trend, when the weather turns cool and dry, I need something as moisturizing as it is pigmented. These new Shiseido lipsticks swipe on smoothly and easily, with a creamy lightweight finish that keeps my lips supple for hours. This dusty red is officially my new go-to for fall.

Tom Ford Lip Color Satin Matte in L.A. Woman, $55

I was ironically just in L.A. when I spotted a friend wearing this gorgeous red lipstick from Tom Ford, and I practically tore her arm off to go through her purse and find it. It was just as flattering on my pale, warm-toned skin as with her dark, cool complexion. Plus, the added rosehip seed oil meant it lasted through multiple rounds of tequila sodas without drying out.

Givenchy Beauty Le Rouge Mat in Rouge Stiletto, $37

Givenchy Beauty lipsticks have the most beautiful bullets—just look at the detail! Aside from that, the velvety semi-matte finish on this alluring red shade is perfect for going from day to night. Even if I drink one too many coffees at the office, I just smudge the edges with the tip of my finger, and the pigment blends seamlessly back into the corners. Easy.

Kat Von D Studded Kiss Crème Lipstick in Misfit, $19

I was already a fan of Kat Von D’s signature liquid liner, but I hadn’t tried her lip products until a recent reorganization of our beauty closet. It’s incredibly pigmented, like most of her other makeup, and the application is delightfully smooth. It takes a moment to set, so I could really perfect the color around my pronounced Cupid’s bow—always a task for me.

Dior Rouge Dior Lipstick in Enigmatic, $37

Dior lipstick is like the LBD you always have in the back of your closet when you know you need an easy win. I swear by this burgundy shade for when I want a bare face, a flick of mascara, and the juiciest, most come-hither lips I can muster.

Bite Amuse Bouche Lipstick in Maple, $26

I cannot tell you how many Bite lipsticks I’ve owned (and tragically misplaced) in my time as a beauty fanatic—they’re really that good. The warm brick red of this Maple shade is calling my name. It’s like the best colors of the autumn leaves combined in one creamy formula.

Nars Full Vinyl Lip Lacquer in Baden Baden, $26

I’ve just started coming around to liquid lip colors, and wow, am I glad I did. This limited-edition release from Nars is the perfect aubergine for making a bold beauty statement, but the high-shine formula keeps it feeling youthful and fun. Nothing makes me feel like a boss babe more than a glossy red lip you can spot for miles.

Pat McGrath Labs Matte Trance Lipstick in Fever Dream, $38

If I could only wear one lip color for the rest of my days, I’m pretty sure I’d choose this gorgeous Pat McGrath lipstick in Fever Dream. As soon as I saw it in person, both her team and myself knew it was the one for me. I even showed up 30 minutes late to a dinner because I couldn’t locate it—your girl needs her look on point before leaving the house. Try this shade, and you won’t regret it.
