There has been a lot of talk recently about the ever-increasing number of shows and events on the international fashion calendar. Designers, stylist, and editors are asking, Do we really need fall, spring, and resort? Is it necessary for ready-to-wear and couture to have separate weeks? And whose idea was it to have New York Fashion Week Men’s and New York Fashion Week Women’s back to back? But then something mesmerizing happens—something like Louis Vuitton collaborating with Grace Coddington for a resort collection shown on the French Riviera—and for a while, the questions stop because the answer is clear: even if we don’t need all of these shows, they’re beautiful and inspiring and bursting with creativity, and that’s reason enough for us to book a flight and get wrapped up in the wonder of it all.

Yesterday, we stepped into Saint-Paul-de-Vence’s Fondation Maeght for the Louis Vuitton Resort 2019 show, where Nicolas Ghesquière sent models down the runway in layers of deconstructed and reimagined separates. Prints ran the gamut from plaid to stripes to florals; there were thigh-high sneaker-boots, *those* trainers that the fashion set is currently obsessed with, and Coddington’s touches—illustrations of her two cats and Ghesquière dog emblazoned on LV-monogrammed accessories.

Sitting front row to take in the ’80s-esque denim jackets, dresses knotted at the waist, and short skirts—some silk and flowy some khaki and pleated—was Ruth Negga, Sienna Miller, Peggy Gou, and Luka Sabbat. Here, a glimpse at the show from start to finish, plus all the looks that went down the runway.
