Liya Kebede Told Us Why She Sleeps in Her Mascara
Weston Wells

No denying, we’ve had Liya Kebede on the brain lately. The 39-year-old Ethiopian-born model, actress, L’Oréal Paris spokesmodel, and philanthropic entrepreneur recently launched her campaign for Calvin Klein Eternity fragrances and walked the runway at Louis Vuitton, Calvin Klein (naturally), and L’Oreal Paris’s first-ever beauty fashion show for spring/summer 2018. Our co-founder Stephanie Mark caught up with her backstage at the L’Oréal Paris show and learned a few little surprises we never realized about Kebede.

1. She Sleeps in Her Mascara

“I got cool advice from a makeup artist who said to me, ‘The best way to have your mascara is to have it the night before and sort of not wash it off too much and sleep on it. And then the next day, it gives you the perfect look.’ It’s kind of true [laughs]. I know it’s not the most hygienic situation, but just a leftover, whatever gives you the perfect little black eye—and I think that’s kind of sexy.”

2. She’s Excited about the State of Modeling

“Honestly, I would say diversity in girls—that’s what’s really exciting right now. It’s really incredible. I love that we’re trying to embrace every girl. When you look around, it’s really nice and colorful and all shapes, all sizes, all walks of life...everything is all included. It’s really fun. The way it should be.”

3. She Feels Her Most Sexy on the Runway

“I don’t think I feel sexy at home, that’s for sure [laughs]. Right here [is where I feel the most sexy]. I think it’s very empowering. All of the energy, getting the energy from everyone; it’s so much goodwill.”
