While we often get to play a fly on the wall as celebrities and models get prepped for major events, that hardly means we see all. Only said star’s go-to glam team knows what *truly* goes down, from what everyone’s eating before heading out, to the songs that tend to play over and over. That’s why we were thrilled when Keri Russell’s makeup artist, Tina Turnbow, happily shared her Met Gala snaps, giving us the details on that dramatic cat eye...and how Keri’s significant other and The Americans costar, Matthew Rhys, almost ended up with something similar. Get the full scoop straight from Tina ahead.

“What we had all talked about [beforehand] was the fact Rei Kawakubo is into construction, then deconstruction. Brian [Magallones] did her hair in a super messy low pony with pieces coming out, and I wanted to ‘construct’ it with this really dramatic, almost punky black eye. After getting her glow on with Colbert MD Illumino Oil and brightening mask, I used Physicians Formula Cream Eyeliner to shape the eye into a wing and put lots of mascara on the bottom lashes [to make them] chunky.”

“You can see Keri has this pearly white lip color on. It’s actually Very Illuminating by Tata Harper—it’s in this pot, white, kind of luminescent. It’s really made as a highlighter, but you can use it on the cheek, the eyes, and the lips, and it’s really pretty.”

“We wanted the red stripe of the pants to be the standout color, so I decided to pick up the white of the shoe [when choosing a lip color].”

“The outfit [was] designed by Marcus Wainwright of Rag & Bone in collaboration with Frank Fleming, Keri’s longtime stylist. They [wanted to] make it something that would feel comfortable for her.”

“Brian and I gave the naturally handsome Matthew Rhys a little skin and hair polishing. But first, a group selfie. We debated on a black eye. We were like, ‘Should we give him eyeliner?’ And then decided against it. We didn’t want him to be too matchy with Keri’s eye.”

“[We played] a lot of Beyoncé, Neil Young, Fleetwood Mack. Matthew was DJ-ing a little.”

“There were French fries delivered. Keri was eating strawberries, but the French fries were the hit. She was downing the French fries.”

“Since we’ve worked together for a while, sometimes we can [have] her done in a half hour, but we really took our time and got a feel for the whole look. She had sent me photos beforehand. I was really into the whole theme of this—the whole rebel bad-ass that Rei Kawakubo is.”
